(playable) VERSION NOW AVAILABLE! Heres the link: http://mirror.kane.cx/freeshare/empires/emp_insurrection_rc3.zip Many thanks to everyone who helped testing and suggesting this map. Its a swamp, basically. Some bits you can drive over, some you can't and end up sinking in. (at the moment trying to make sure the bits you are supposed to drive over can be driven over...) Many thanks to Bumgravy, without whom this would have been impossible.
But but...you told me it was finished... Also, I'm pretty sure I told you that the empires community wasn't nearly smart enough to spell this and thus to rename it to emp_swamp D: Also, with this amount of props + visibility, its going to be a cluster fuck of scunts
Looks really sweet, has a nice swampy atmosphere too. My only suggestion: increase the texture scale of the water by about 2x. It'll help performance, but more importantly reduce the obvious tiling.
What broccoli said. Also personally i would make the fog less white. Very good looking. I can't wait for a top down view.
Thanks for all the great comments guys. Its not currently playable, due to lack of minimap and a series of odd gaps in the terrain that are invisible in hammer, yet all too apparent when playtested. It may be because I used clip too to chop up the displacements to get smoother water edges, but then again, I don't really know what is causing them. Also, Broccoli, I am really new to mapping and I am wondering if you could please tell me how the ground cover (the ferns, ect) in the Screenshots thread in the community map project forum was made? EDIT: this pic
Those were made using detail props, which are automatically (and randomly) placed onto a surface at compile-time. They are defined in the details.vbsp file, which can be found in your empires directory. The one included in the community map project contains all the entries you need to replicate that look. Just download the zip, extract, modify the ground texture (vmt) that you're using to contain a line for the relevant surfaceprop type, and you're away! (Note that you'll also need all the foliage models). If you get stuck on anything specifically, feel free to ask. There are plenty of people here who know their stuff. P.S. To get rid of those seams in your displacements, you might try the "sew" tool (use when all faces are selected).
ya sew them up, there are lotsa tutorials on using 'sew' effectively. its not that hard when u get the hang of it.
n oit's not hard, just freakin' annoying, especially when you have to start cutting other pieces in your map just so that everything lines up. get it right the first time and you're good, do it later and you'll go blad =D
The gaps in the terrain are fixed now, and the fog has been recoloured, among other things. Lots of smaller props (tank traps, barbed wire ect) have been scattered in sensible places, and the map should be playable by the end of tonight, all being well. I still can't get the detail props to work properly yet...
I mean its only from the pics ive seen but is it possible to drive with tanks through that map??? The prop limit is about 4000 btw
Driving with tanks is possible, your gonna be hard pressed and somewhat vulnerable if you try and fit anything larger than a medium through those trees. I'm pretty sure I'm safe with the prop limit... hovering just above what is sensible at the moment.
New water and recoloured fog, among other things. Map has the potential to be a lagfest, so I'm working on optimising now. Detail props still refuse to work.
Since you're too lazy, I'll pull your latest screenshots over from the clan forum. 'Ave an overview, bitches. And anuzzer pretteh picture.
