Right but they never happen, I've seen DOZENS of empires spin offs on just about any other engine you could imagine and the all fail for one reason or another. More so we've had this discussion over and over again, and I've been in this community since 2003, 11 god damn years. It's not going to happen, talk is cheap, accomplishing it is far more difficult. That being said, the discussion has been brought up within the team before, alot. We might try and go for it when Candles is doing his senior year project which is still a few years off, although he needs to get rig of his GabeN worshiping complex as S2 is still bsp based and everything is baked in.
http://forums.empiresmod.com/showthread.php?t=1&page=3 Well it doesn't prove he(angry)(... wait... was that always your name? I duno, lack of sleep probably but, I feel like you had a different name) has been here since 2003 but, it does prove he has been here since the start of this forum.
its not that you just gotta understand that people bringing this up once or twice a year for 11 years can get kinda old.
Oh I totally understand, I have always laughed at the Empires spin-off projects that severely underestimated the work and dedication Mr. Krenz put into Empires. On the other hand, the market for game engines also has completely changed. Where you had to pay 500k for commercial use of the Unreal Engine, you now pay a few bucks per month and get full access to the most professional tools available. So it is always fun to flirt with the what-if scenario.
while half true, although I am surprised on how many engines have come out. This simply makes creating a new game more accessible and more feasible, the same amount of work is still required. I am 100 percent behind Unreal Engine 4 port, the main reason behind my support is that Unreal Engine 4 use source code access rather than using UnrealScript which was the real issue with UDK.
I'm mainly fearful for decent netcode. Are there many engines that can handle 64 players and 20 vehicles well? Frostbite?
Renegade X holds very well. Even the version way back in the day. That is why I suggested to candles to take a look at it just to see if anything could be done.
What just puzzles me is basically what this is saying of the overall reception of the mod with players outside of this community. I mean we don't even know how feasible it is to keep working on this game in it's current state if it isn't really achieving anything.
We don't really know until we try. Like all games die, and yet we still have people here interested in it. I think if we release a polished FINISHED product, we may revive the old days but with new faces and we all get to laugh at them for being exactly like us 5 to 6 years ago. And when it dies again, we can do a sequel better than ever. Everyone will have experience from the trials before and be better equipped, could even build our own engine for it. Maybe release that sequel for money. Either way, the experience from everyone doing this won't be for nothing. That I know. Some of you may think its a waste of time, but I think of it as a way for people have to an excuse to polish their skills. It is certainly an enlightening learning experience for everyone involved in the project.
I nominate Teef as project lead of the new port :/ Yeah lets do this shit. Just need to figure out a name for the new game and what's going to be different. Do we just want a port or a completely new empires like game? I suggest a more futuristic empires.
I had to go to page 9 to find it. It is easy to find if you know it is a mod, but that isn't usually the case for people who never heard about it before. It is amusing that most of the negative reviews for it complain about no players, probably the main reason why no wants to try it out anymore.
Reviews Positive (190) Negative (21) We need more people giving some positive reviews. Also what ever happened with putting Empires on greenlight ?
Concerning PBR: I just had a look at the CSGO models and it seams that they already have a shader that can differentiate between dielectric and metallic reflections. I just don't know what it's name is, but you can clearly see it in the reflection maps.
