Why do we never play on Epic?

Yep. Viper fan boys ruined it for everyone. I'm not expressing and hate or disrespect to the people behind Viper. Obviously it's much better to have the server around and I realize it took great deal of work to get it to the state its running at now. However, thinking that G server would not in any way have been an improvement from Viper is plain wrong. There is the obvious hardware upgrade, but more notably was the politics (or lack of them). Rawr was very selective about giving people admin and the second he saw someone misuse it, he took it away, no questions asked. Also the distribution of admin was not decided strictly by favouritism (Ahhem *viper*), but it was given to people that would make good admins. This meant there was considerably more level-headed admins on the server at one time, which improved the overall experience. Oh well RIP G-server 2012-2012.

Empires Learning Center was better.

 

It was the best, been there a lot. Had most fun on that server

 

Then I shall set up servers to declare war on Viper and Epic servers.
It is the only solution.

There is literally nobody playing Empires during my down time ( ~2000-2300 MT). In fact although my friends list full with 99% Empires folk, it seems nobody is playing anything except a handful of people playing Dota2.

I am usually lurking in console on Viper though. I just don't have time to try and seed a server myself. I'm spending my evenings mostly playing GT6 or ARMA3 with my flatmates at the moment. I'd love to play Empires if there was ever anyone playing. I don't stay up so late these days so I don't know if it gets any busier later.

I would have set up a server a while ago if there was Linux support. No way am I running it in a VM.

 

I ran a test server as a VM under ESXi4.1, didn't notice anything that untoward in comparison with physical but I only managed to get about 15 people in. But given it was a vanilla install it didn't run that bad. I was surprised.

 

We ran a server in a VM a few years back. It performed slightly worse than the windows server (that was with 64 players).

edit: ok watching now don't be angry. The intro song is the war of the worlds original audio tapes intro. I fucking love that song, it's like spoken word madness.
