Turrets that are underground and only fold out if theres a target.
In passive modus you can only see a hatch on the ground.

    Just a random idea.

What will you do if the terrain is sloped? It will look wierd and out of place; and adds perticularly nothing to what already exists...

I belive if you are really keen; you can model texture and animate it yourself and add it ingame then release it to the public :p

It wouldn't work, you'd be able to put them in sloped terrain, and they could then fire through displacements. If you played earlier versions of the mod, you'll know how much it sucked to have people shooting through displacements.

That's actually a pretty neat idea. Perhaps a deployable weapon for the Grenadier- class? Albeit I'd believe it would become an overpowered harassment tool :|

Place it on the terrain normal.

Turrets already track well on any angle, as was shown in the old versions when we had the glorious ceiling turrets.

You could add some code so that you couldn't place it if there wasn't room for the thing to open unobstructed.

It could be a researchable next to lvl3 turrets so that your base defences cant be raped without entering danger range, then the attackers concentrate, and arties get increased use on close range targets.

What Vaun said is actually very good idea.

When the turrets are underground, they can't get destroyed before someone is harrashing them to pop up and start shooting.

This could actually one very nice idea to lure people to research underground level 3 turrets and also place more turrets around their base.

And I don't see so big problems with these turrets.

They would be as hard or as easy to place as current turrets too, you can't place those on a terrain which slopes a lot so you couldn't place these either.

Everybody is forgetting that you can't place objects outside of the map, which is what will happen if you try to place underground turrets on world brushes and on displacements where nodraw brushes mimic terrain underneath it.

i like the Uturrent idea, but instead of iddqd in underground mode i suggest making it take the same amount of damage as walls

Those buildings have their origin point above the ground, an underground turret would have its origin point outside of the map.

I don't get what you mean.

Look at the ceiling turrets that the combine use, they are one object, with the origin at the base, but they can more or less pop out of the ceiling. In fact if you look at the model when retracted, a lot of it actually intersects with the ceiling brush.

Just make it an animated object which functions like those turrets, have it be resistant to damage when inactive, and shoot when active.

All you need to do is show a closed hatch or something when they are closed, then to open them, open the hatch, and move the gun platform out of a black void which is under the hatch, then start shooting. To close them, do the reverse.
