    Somewhere, the old dev team is crying while their years of stress at trying to balance the current tech tree is thrown out the window.

    Alot of people seem to have issue with the way this works right now with engines and armor as it takes away alot from the initial choices, as you MUST choose every beginning option to be a decent comm.

    There are a few ways to change this, including grouping them at different tiers for different tech trees.
    Code:
    	Physics		Chemestry	Mechanical	EE	Biology
    Tier-1			Armor					Armor+Engine
    Tier-2	Armor+Engine	Engine				Armor
    Tier-3					Armor+Engine	Engine
    This way they each have different options about when they get engine or armor and can be combined based upon this. You can change the variations around, but you get the idea. Certain engines can be generally better this way, aswell as certain armor. Tech trees give advantages at certain times in these areas.

    This "put the armour/engine in with the weapons" idea is very very good. really really nice idea. I agree that if the armours/engines are together, then with the exception of some specific map uses, nobody will choose the bad ones. It also means that you have to make the engines/armours equally good, which isn't as interesting as mixing them into the research tree but not having them equally good.

    yeah mechanical has shit weapons at the moment. give that two armour + engines.

    I'd definately make chemical the tree with no armour / engine, because they get awesome weapons.

    I'd also make biology (or at least one of the trees) the cheap/quick option, like we have now. having that option is nice. If you're behind in tech, it's good to have an option that means that at a permaneant slight disadvantage, you can at least avoid having a few critical minutes where the enemy has out-tech'd you. I always liked that in the old system.

    My idea, that incorporates Drag's weaopns but the best parts from the current research tree.

    In case anyone didn't know what "subtype a, subtype b" is , take a look at Drag's Chemistry weapons.
    We have: "explosives, coolants, spam(swarm, salvo, etc)". Those would be the subtypes.

    If you put the armor/engine in the weapon trees you are forced
    to use a specific engine/armor if you research a tree.
    Because you usually only research a single tree you only have one
    chance to get a good armor against the enemy weapons...

    BE:

    use reactive and good engine, like fission or bio diesel
    mechanical tier one

    enjoy your superAFVs

    While I can relate to this a bit, it also means that there is no dedication to anything. You piece-wise choose what you invest in. If we are to continue this trend I would at least want it to cost a bit more to acquire engines or armor.

    No because the idea is that due to the extra weapons, all research times are shorterned. So to get a new armour would take 2 and a half minutes, tops.
    It's the perfect balance between being forgiving and unforgiving for your research mistakes.

    Short research times? Did you bother to look how long each tear takes to research?

    Who are the admins for this server? When everyone leaves please put the res limit up and all research on for people who come in later.

    There needs to be a way to disable building of weapons if there are better versions with these scripts.

    well, standard weapons should be removed for real

    but you may want, say, the light weapons from mechanical on your tank (say, because you want to have full reactive on your afv)

    If they actually go with a design like this there really needs to be a remake of the vehicle customization menus. Sorting it by type would tremendously cut down the clutter.

    If you want engines or armors to be with the respective trees, then they should either be in the first tier of said tree or in a secondary or auxiliary subtree.

    I wrote up a tree for kicks at one point with a very similar structure, but with engines and armor still in each respective tree, and moved MG's over to mechanical for the hell of it, but yeah.
