I was thinking there should be a map that takes place at night,, or another idea all maps cycle thru day and night skys depending on how long the battle is,,,

like one map could start of at night and turn into day eventually,, and same with weather,, sence aircraft will used in the future how about it rains ever so often making for poor flying conditions

I know it's certainly possible at least.

Not sure how taxing it would be on the client and server though =o

You know I never seen the Source engine do that. The nearest thing I've seen to that was the loading times between chapters in Half-Life 2.

Krenzo has said he's going to try and implement it sometime after aircraft are in the game. He said that snow would freeze your wings and make it hard to turn and you'd lose lift. Rain will blurr your vision and make it very hard to see. And electrical storms have the chance of striking your aircraft and disabling all of your electronics for a short while. E.G: Your radar, missiles, engine, electronic sensors will go dead.

One question I have about the electric storms is will it make your hud fizzle out for a short while? Think like the PPC when it overheats your mech in Mechwarrior.

Lighting in Source is static and pre-rendered, so night and day cycles aren't possible in the same map. IMO night maps would require some kind of night vision system, at least to make them more interesting.

I'm not sure, but I think, Source can't handle alternating skyboxes...

plus having all lights dynamic is rather heavy for the engine :|

Ok that explains that day & night effects are possible, but what about weather? Would it work in the same way as the day & night video or will it be static like de_aztec?

mostly likely de_aztec, unless someone made a custom rain anim

all rain is is a big nodraw box made into a rain entity

That's not a day and night cycle at all to me, seems more like switching on and off lights. Skybox is very well done, but that's just an animated texture, the real problem is map geometry. I keep saying the same: lightmaps are pre-rendered, that cannot be changed. We also don't know the cost of doing that kind of trick, probably won't be usable in multiplayer because performance and/or map size. I mean, lightmaps takes a lot of space, imagine you need to have in memory day and night, so double map size and space in memory required.

Maybe there would be a way using color correction to change dynamically the scene colors:

    http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Color_correction_(concept)

Never used that entity so really don't know if result would be credible.

Well weather should affect infantry especially. Trudging thru the mud, jeeps getting stuck... tanks worrying about if they will flip and going under the water with a bad rut you can not see...

Or possibly make a different versions of a map, & order them something like this.

    Map: emp_crossroads
    Weather: Snow
    Time of Day: Dusk

Yes... the same map with a night cycle and weather cycle would make it feel different if and when the weather would actually affect the game play and the night vision would feel real as in it is not day time.

A lot of games use that technique... even GP Moto for the PS1 had it.

i think it would seem better for long battles,, like at night it would be easier for a ninja to sneak in to your base ect,,, or you can schedule your main attack when its dark,,, i think weather would be mainly an air issue,,

It would be AWESOME if you could research weather-modifing technology and every once in a while make a storm over the enemy base or make it rain to cover your assault until you're right upon them.
