a firemode select is dumb. i want one key to do one thing. if the gun has 4 functions then i want to be able to bind that to 4 different keys, not have to toggle between functions, especially in the heat of battle.
I guess you can put a mode select key and then an optional set of specific mode1 mode2 mode3 etc buttons, although I think most people would find having to use half a dozen buttons annoying.
To be honest I think a firemode select and some weapon choices (if the weapon has a grenade launcher have that be a different weapon) should be fine.
honestly, what kind of a gun has 6 different functions? the most i can practically think of is four. fire, alt fire, ironsights, and melee. all of those could be comfortably bound to buttons on your typical cheap gamer mouse or on unused keys on your keyboard. having a fire button and a selector button would be terribly obnoxious without using at least 3 keys where you'd bind your two most commonly used functions to mouse 1 and mouse 2 by default anyway. for instance, a 2 key setup with fire as left mouse and change mode as right mouse with 3 modes (fire, ironsights, and melee, in that order) would require a person to right click, then left click to change to ironsights, then right click 2 times again to switch to fire mode, then left click to shoot, then right click, left click to exit ironsights, then right click, left click to melee someone, then right click again to switch back to fire mode. compare that to a guy who has 3 different functions bound doing the exact same thing. the guy presses mouse2, switches to ironsights. mouse1, shoots. mouse2, exits ironsights. mouse3, melees someone. the guy in example one had to press 10 buttons in order to do what it took the guy in example two only 4 button presses. it only gets worse if you add a 4th function. to me it's blazingly obvious that having separate keys for every command is superior.
Why bother with burst, single shot and full auto firemodes when you can just not hold mouse1 instead?
oh you mean kind of like how you already use a keyboard to interface with both a computer and a piano? ironic.
No because its not a realistic shooter and there is no point to single shot in how empires plays and with how damage is done. For single shot and different firemodesto be remotely useful or worth implementing you would have to completely change how empires combat works. Its arcadey, deal with it; go play ARMA2 if you want firemodes.
Er, I'd like to be able to use the AR in single shot mode for greater accuracy and in full auto for... full auto... Constantly tapping mouse1 on a full auto gun feels cheap, a proper mode for it simply adds polish.
LEAN. YES. Although, lean + firemodes would make for some weird tactical gameplay. I've always seen Empires as being a little more arcade-y than that.
