Honestly, if I were doing something stupid, say, in a parking lot on flat ground, I wouldn't bother with a helmet. maybe gloves w/ long sleeves, cause I hate scraping myself up. bruises are fine, but bruises with scabbing and dirty cuts can suck. but yeah, if there are vehicles driving around, I'd probably wear one. Skulls getting crushed under cars is not pretty.
We've got plenty of fresh powder here in Tahoe. But yeah ice sucks, but it feels better sliding on ice rather than gravel.
In WA, we get some ice, some powder. I ALWAYS wear a helmet. It doesn't hurt, and it keeps my head warm. Skiing and bording the same. I do tree runs on my board, so it's needed there too. Only just started skiing, so I avoid tree runs and can't see myself hitting anything....you really only fall sideways...but I still keep the helmet on. But yeah...ice fucking hurts. And can mess up your wax too.
Yeah, exactly. Besides, there are a lot of shit ugly ski helmets, but if you get yourself a nice one, even a skate boarding helmet with a hat under, it looks alright and can save your ass. I personally have a quiksilver boarding helmet.
Ice is prolly just as hard but when you won't be getting tiny pieces of gravel pulled out by tweezers in the hospital after falling on it.
but gravel is rough so you stop, ice you just keep going on and on and slide into a tree or something, and god forbid if it's a spruce or evergreen.
well your not gonna be sliding fast enough to hit anything hard. We're talking about slopes with some melted snow that froze, so its not like a slanted ice cube with trees. It's just the landing that hurts but you won't slide into more pain. And you actually can slide on gravel specially when its old and full of loose rocks. Either way it hurts, but my point is helmets are for little kids or people risking their lives knowingly.
In michigan, people cut edges onto their skis because it's so icy 90% of the time. Uncle went out in powder once and tumbled down the mountain cause his skis had too sharp and edge, and when he want to turn, he sorta flew sideways. It'd be funny going down a hill and then having to turn at a 30 degree angle to the ground with a knuckle holding you off the ground.
i've been snow boarding, not skiing, and I crashed into a fucking tree. I hate trees, especially pine trees. I put them into my fireplace to om nom nom them.
Why bother weaing a helmet? What about jockstraps? I mean, it's way less common to hurt your crotch then your head, but hell, it hurts a lot more.
Exactly, there is just so many ways to avoid hitting a tree on a snowboard. Hell you could even just jump and push the board into the tree. The big reason(other than much more speed) skiing is more hazardous is cause each ski will wrap around the tree. Huge tree nut shot.
