I think that a quick tip video for playing would work rather well, keep it short and interesting and people will usually watch it (People don't like to read, but watching is not so bad). Put out a few quick tips in the vid like: - You have limited lives; Don't waste them - An engineer can be just as offensive as any other class - Vehicles can run you over - Carefully consider the construction of a vehicle and don't ever build a vehicle just to get from point A to B. -Sheepe He's "Back"!!! RUN!!!!
People can learn pretty fast. I was only thinking about bigger annoyances like district402, escort, arty in wrong tree (or too good) and so on.
District has turned into the worst map ever with the new balance. Its pretty much pointless using anything but mortarspam/nadespam/revivespam it used to be a fun map but now its just no-skill whoring.
People disconnect and delete a mod even faster. Those points shouldn't delay a possible Steam release, because balancing the gameplay is an ongoing task without end. (and even easier to do, when you can update via Steam).
When has district not been mortarspam/nadespam/revivespam? At least the latest update removed the unbearable turretspam.
Good riflemen used to rule it now there is almost no point you can't keep up with the revive spam when you can barely even get ammo because all the boxes are nade/mortar spammed.
People are shallow. Empires needs to look more proffesional before it's ready for Steam in my opinion. fucking ironic really how people now expect mods to look professional when they are -- almost by definition --unprofessional.
Its a problem that people are impatient, even with games they know are goign to be complicated. I played eternal silence the other day, and no one knew what was going on despite it being exactly explained in the 1 page map intro, which noone even glanced at. Empires needs some kind of in game info boxes before its ready... Mouse over a VF and a box would pop up in the corner saying "this is a FRIENDLY vehicle factory, it spawns VEHICLES" or "this is an ENEMY radar it makes RESEARCH so go GRENADE it". Anyone patient enough to watch a tutorial is likely patient enough to read the manual or just figure it out on their own. You could make a tutorial so good you win awards and they make it into a feature length movie, but people would still open the game and get mad because they die every time they run over those funny colored circles on the ground and then quit because some commander dude yelled at them. If it was built into the game and automatically played the first time you started it, then maybe the smarter people would watch it after they get completly owned in a couple games. Hell I didn't read the manual until I had been playing for a few weeks and wanted specific answers.
thou it inevitably would promote it. I didn't intend it as such. The various people I play empire with now are generally skilled and games with alot of the vets have been awesome. I think it would be nice to have a way that we could easily pick out vets in a players list. With out having to add pretty much everyone on steam friends.
I don't think looks are a big deal empires doesn't look that bad comparatively. I mean NF heavy, med and barracks could use a reworking and the inf models aren't the hottest but I really think fixing the unintuitive gameplay, bad gui and lack of a good set of tutorials would be enough to consider releasing.
Oh I don't care about looks, it doesn't effect Empires. With unskinned wireframe cubes shooting each other it would still be a great game. But Joe Public is ignorant and stupid and needs and needs a little bling. It starts with the website. You come here to download the mod and it looks crap. It doesn't exactly grab you and make you want to play. The website is apparently being redone though, so thats good.
That is exactly what would be the best idea. I brought that up too sometime in the past. Look at how MS:C did it.
