I guess the best example of this is Zombie Panic Source that, before Left4Dead, when it was hosted on steam shot up from the hundreds of players it had at the time, to about twenty thousand, if I recall correctly. Why not push for getting Empires to be hosted on steam? As far as I know, you simply need to integrate Steamworks functionality with Empires in order for it to be hosted. This should provide an influx of support and attention and likely reduce some work when releasing patches. Someone wants it.
This was discussed months ago and i remember Mootant saying that Empires will be put on Steam in the future. The first batch of released mods (including Zompie Panic) was lucky, they got put on the "My Games" - tab of millions of Steam users. Unfortunately some people complained about that and Valve removed the mods. Today Dystopia and Eternal Silence were released on Steam, but Valve didn't even make an announcment about it. I guess there won't be big publicity for new mods anymore, but you still get the easy install and easy update feature that makes it worth to be a "steamed" mod.
They announced it today for both ES and Dystopia. btw, there are only 10 mods listed in steampowered http://store.steampowered.com/freestuff/mods/ one of them IS empires ...
I don't think it's stable enough. As the ratio of vehicles-to-infantry approaches 1, lag approaches infinity.
Plus, I kinda like the small community. With less than 500 people, everyone knows eachother better, and it becomes better in general. Most of us who are here would most likely end up together in some great clan if we got over 10k peeps.
I love these types of posts where everyone fears the influx of new players. Everyone was a new player once, so you have to give them a shot. Most of the people talking bad about it are new players. Unless you played the mod when it was still a mod for BF1942 then you really have no room to complain about new players. I for one would welcome new players to empires, a larger base for playing the game means clans can actually scrim one another.
I think the empires vets should get something by there name (like in CoD with ranks) to signify who has been here before it became mainstream
