I thought I remembered one time that Vicki had it where it kind of worked on its own...
Last time I played though you can't votemap in the middle of the map anymore.
However I suspect someone left my steam I.D. with some deprecated set of permissions or something after removing admin so your mileages may vary.

votemaps and high-threshold rtvs tend to work I think, and just a larger rotation.

But most of this stuff is just preference stuff which can't be solved really with such a small playerbase.
Remember when that one clan set up a server and then it was the only server because the populated it, and they had ridiculous settings and everyone bitched? If there were 5 full servers no one would care. It's like that on a smaller scale.

Also, I think a lot of maps (maybe not anymore) are really handicapped by low res-rates when the servers are empty. Maybe the scaling needs adjustment.

What do you mean "these days"???
District escort money rinse repeat has been a fucking staple for several years.
Probably one of the biggest reasons people quit as well.

"A lot of people are pretty silent, they don't yell out their opinions."

Maybe now, but year ago and before we had a crapton of people voicing their upset with the bullcrap. And dont say they didnt tell admins about it, they did. Even I remember plain as day like 1,5 or so years ago when i personally complained to Azk ,when forest_variation_nth was played like 3th time in 2 hours, that their system sucks and people are getting upset about it. I got a response which can be condensed into "Fuck off, Im not going to acknowledge the problem, vets are complainers and they are always wrong, noones tellig you to play here, get out".
So I did. With a bunch of others.

Yeah, I don't get why this little nugget of knowledge seems absent in so many mappers' minds.

You can make a fucking gorgeous Silk-caliber map, but if no one wants to play it, why bother?

    Thats a fair point really.
I feel this way towards midbridge really. It seems alot of people love it, but after the first version of it, ive grown to dislike it alot. Uphill combat is sometimes fun, but it really works poorly with empires mechanics. All those forest turn firefights into target spam= win. All those side alleys look good on paper but make holding any place on map nearly impossible.

And every newer version just added to the feature pile. Towers with battlements, not working ramp in the middle..

Its seriously one map I think halving its features would do it a big favor.

The problem here is that they actually play the game, most of the time. I still don't understand what happens when a map wins a vote by like 70% or something and only 5 people join when it starts. That is truly mind boggling.

I can agree about the map situation though, even when the server is near full it seems to be on a map that I just don't like because it is always being played.

Is there anyway to give maps a certain weight to them? Like the more it gets voted the lower the chance it will appear in the map vote? This wouldn't be a time thing either, it would affect things over a few days so that really under played maps get voted in simply because escort and stuff doesn't even appear in the vote for most of the day.

I can't really do the math part, but something like if you have 20 maps. If one gets voted in its chance to appear by default will drop by 1.9% and the others will rise by .1% each. The effect would look a bit wonky at first, but I think after a week of this the default maps will mostly be custom maps that never get played, while people who want to play escort or whatever can simply nominate it in. I gotta say, I can't really remember a time when someone nominates money or escort, they always just appear in the default listing and people vote it in.

I did not have time to read most of this thread, but this is indeed an issue.

One solution, that I actively encourage, is to have as many people nominate at beginning of map as possible. This ensures that a larger variety of maps appear in the mapvote, and if enough people nominate the vote will populate with almost entirely the nominations.

The downside is people still nominate money. :pathetic:

You dont get the point of what ive been saying al along, the people who play the game have an oppinion. That oppinion is fucking shit and should not count. Just change the map to good maps they'll play it and like it. Im talking about high population not when the actives play and have their 8v8 on money and shit.

    @lazy
Doesnt really help with the fact that even newbies avoid certain maps, because well, they suck. With a system like that, youd loose on popular classics, and would have to play moors and whatnot instead. It somewhat undermines the point of voting really.

Or you could add or subtract votes on that map based on how frequently it is being played.

For example, if no one is voting for mvalley, then maybe it eventually starts out with one positive vote for it. Perhaps eventually, it gets two free votes, etc.

Likewise, if people keep playing fucking money, then maybe it starts with one negative vote and must be dug out of a hole. If the entire server still votes for money, then it surely would get played, but you'd need more and more people to want it to continue to play it.

Although this is probably a moderately complex plugin to make and it really wouldn't add much utility to the existing system.

Moving voting to the end of the match helps much much more. More time to nominate, no in-game shit going on when you have to vote, etc.

    This.

Every single one of you miserable organ sacks would do well to nominate maps every time you are playing this game. If you don't... I probably won't do anything about it but I'll be just a little less happy for it.

always come back to the choices in maps....

Have the population smart server rotate through all viable maps with no auto map votes however, allow rtv'ing for a chosen map.

<we can do this part now right?>
The server should announce next map just after end of round and give 20-30 seconds for an rtv to be called and reset that timer each time a new(someone who has not previously called for it) rtv is called. This cycles till either the necessary count is reached or no more new calls for RTV is counted.

Implement map weight system. The more often a map is voted for... the lower on the map list it will show until it can be pushed off the list's minimum weight setting.

Some maps like say... escort or money may have a predefined minimum weight.

You can still nominate, its just like senor says though. No one really bothers with it. I assume before it was because there wasn't a lot of time for it because everyone was being distracted by comm vote and pre-game shenanigans, but I don't know what stops people from nominating stuff with a end of map vote*. The point is more so that custom maps or even some stock maps enter the voting menu with much more regularity, compared to now where because of multiple versions of a map exist the vote system can't phase out something even though a clone of sorts was already played.

*I haven't actually played much recently, but you guys make it sound like end of map vote hasn't help much in this regard even though it should have.

Oh, that reminds me of another idea. When there is no nominations it does a simple map cycle thing, so if players actually want to force next map to be something else they have to nominate it. No matter how many nominations it will give nextmap as 1 of the choices. (Keep nextmap set? "emp_whatever") type thing.

So when someone types nextmap and disagrees with it they can simply nominate a map they want to play, and others by seeing that will either nominate something else they want to play or just vote to keep current nextmap when the vote pops up.

I wish there was a pre-voting period where you could define any & all maps you'd like to play and any maps you wouldn't like to play.

Then a vote is prepared based on the top 5ish maps with the most "'yeh's minus 'neh's" and everyone votes on one map from that pool.

I hate having to nominate just ONE map. I'd be satisfied with a number of maps.

yes plz. this is what ive wanted all along for pugs/scrims

the empires servers have a monopoly. use it to introduce people to lesser known maps. that doesnt mean you should change to a map that sucks with small playercounts (like moors, which is only good with a large amount of players)
