I think it's because FPS is seen as more 'cool' for younger audiences today, which is why you see far more jocks / sollys playing Modern Warfare 2 and being like "OMG ITS TEH GREATEST GAEM EVERZ" because it's the only game they've played, because all there cool friends have played it. RTS is sort of perceived as more 'nerdy', and aren't played as much. It doesn't help that FPS is ridiculously popular on console and RTS isn't, and XBox Live is flooded with 10 year olds who think they're cool because they played an R-rated game and have said the 'f-word'. lolno very few strategy games are really strategy, and intelligence or openmindedness don't play any part in them.
It does in x-com. There's so many ways to fuck yourself up the ass and start an unrecoverable decline.

lol yeah. there are retarded ass strategy gamers just like there are evil genius FPS players. I played sins, that game's metagame is pretty horrible. I mean I enjoyed the game, but it was more about memorizing a set build order and sticking to it than it was about being some sort of strategic mastermind.
+1 That is true. I don't like to stereotype but I've found that more intelligent individuals tend to be on RTS games generally. Also I have found that there are quite intelligent FPS players as well but they are few and far between. Generally its just what looks more simple and appealing to younger people. Have you tried the expansions that are now out with it, it kinda made doing that impossible now since either your going to see somone turtle up or try to ally with you...
