The last (and first) time I visited the server I was kicked for having >300ms ping.

Sticking with Viper and G4tC.

 

We don't want servers to crash. So we kick laggers.

 

1 month = long time ago = 420 in a nutshell

Well guys i dont know why people have so much random stuff to say i but anyways about the 300 ms ping, I have put a high ping kicker plugin on the server. So sry if it kick you but when we have 40 people on the server which the last week that's been like 25% of the time we cant have people with 300 ping or it will lag everyone so also if you have 300 ping.
Then i'd say you either have a bad isp or you from e.u

Ping kicking is how you can tell a server owner knows nothing about modern server technology.

 

I'm curious about this since it seems to make sense that a lagger can affect a server. But googling this gave me lots of mixed opinions on this issue and many agree that the degree to which a high pinger affects a server depends on the game's codes. Something about ignoring packet losses.

I'm no networking expert, so this is confusing me - is it dependent on the server or the game?

 

It's dependant on the game and how much lag compensation there is.
Source has lots of lag compensation so the server doesn't wait for the client to send it's reply stating "I'm up to date" before going to the next frame, while older games like Quake 3 wait for all clients to be up to date before the next wave of packets goes out.

This means that in source individuals can have massive pings without affecting other people (except for when other people try to shoot a player rubber banding crazily), while in Quake 3, everyones ping basically gets bumped up to the highest player on the servers ping, and if someone drops the entire server has to wait until they time out or come back.
