It would look very suspicious if you gained that many points in such a short amount of time. No doubt looking at the logs would be enough to confirm that your "exploiting".
good point Drag0wn I think I'll stick to time played as Drag0wn said people can exploit points and true what thecreeper said but they can also exploit points in a sneakier manner and I don't want this to be a major chore for me to decide the winner and have to double check if people are exploiting points.
Oh wow, spike has that much play time? Coulda sworn he really only played when there's like 15 people on or something. As an aside, commanders can get a bunch of points. I'm usually sitting in the top 3 of my team score wise, the only time it goes lower is when heavies start rolling because around that point I don't have anything to build in base and it's pretty hard to go anywhere to build anything else up without exploding due to heavies. However, new commanders can't actually make that many points because they can't multi task the way you need to empires. It feels awkward when I can kinda keep up with commanding in empires but in an actual rts like age of empires I'll get to the castle age and the other guy not only hit the imperial age but has a massive army of war elephants attacking me. Edits cause I feel like it: I wanted to say something along the lines of it would security's idea doesn't sound so bad if you took a snap shot of points now and compare them to end of the contest to see who advanced the highest, with the reasoning being that the people who would bother to game the system are vets most likely and they tend to be high enough in the rankings that I don't think it would be the easiest thing to do. I do feel like it would encourage people not to just play but try a little harder to do better. I don't know how hard or easy it would be for you to check this nor if people could easily game the system though, it just seems hard and a lot of effort to me. It also is kinda of a crap contest for the top 5 players right now, it's hard to imagine security or Z!000000M gaining a couple of thousand points.
Oh good, but I was talking about the in-game score, not VIPER stats ranking. Thousands of points? I needed another 3 whole gaming days.
This contest is the closest I will ever get to being paid for playing Empires. (Trickster did never hire me) Vicky, how about you make a raffle for the price and for every hour played participants get an additional entry ticket? (and a minimum of, lets say, 20 hours played for entry)
I guess you don't remember vipers last contest, the prize was a steam game as well raffles have stringent laws, I don't wanna go there.

Really, I like this idea and I really appreciate what you did for Empires. But still, it's not very tempting when the "winners" are pretty much predetermined. aka, our current top10 connection time player. This is the main reason why I suggested a score-based tournament. Also, I just checked VIPER stats, I think something is seriously fucked up. According to "activity", everyone is super-hella active and we should have 3 full servers right now.
the top ten is not all time top ten its the time played from starting on Wednesday and so far ranger is leading last time I checked. I'm not going by the activity bar but by time connected and checking logs of leaders to make sure most of that time was actually playing
1: Activity bar is broken. 2: I know it's not about all time connection time. But, for example, I am sure that 99% of our players aren't going to play more than JGF in the next 2 months.
JGF works all day and if he plays its usually after 7 PM his time which is EDT. He is away many weekends and on vacations as well. I don't see why others cant play more than him. But its up to the players to put in the time. I can only offer an incentive, I can't force them to play. and even if fly wins he's an admin so the next non admin with second best playing time wins as well.
