Hes talking about THE doppler effect. The phenomenon named after the dude Christian doppler. I think he made a formel to calculate something about it. Cant remember if it was change in speed of frequency or whatever. Have not used it in 2 years. Stuff that moves towards you will shift the frequency spectre up making the sound more highpitch and oposite if going away from you. Mostly explained to people by the sound of an ambulance passing by you. Edit: Same thing happens to light. Therefore you can often determin if a star or galaxy is moving away by seeing how much the wavelength of certain stuff like iron have changed. It also tells if it is moving away or towards you. Yay I had astrophysics on beginners level . found the wiki for it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doppler_effect
Buh for an exam I once had to draw all the goddamn lines for two sound sources and define their collision ellipsoid -_-
hahaha. but yeah, even battlefield 2 (oooooooold) had doppler effect for its aircraft. it makes the aircraft sound WAY better. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=a4k_LuuF_Yg&NR=1 this one is really awesome, If i ever made an empires trailer it would have sounds from this added over an intro blackness
Angry, just watch a little bit of F1 races and you will hear very clearly how the doppler effect affects there.
I used this as an excuse to get used to goldwaves NEW multiquince tool, and here's what I whipped up. This is what it could sound like NF dropships attacked by flak batteries: http://media.putfile.com/NF-dropship-demo FFLLYY IN TO THE DANGER ZOOOOONE! Well one of two things, one I'm not entirely sure on the mechanics of the effect and two, that's entirely coding wise and thus krenzo's department.
Lol epic stuff. I really hope that there will at some point be flak canons . I never had to draw doppler stuff only calculate a lot. My final A level exam, the one where you only talk and draw, I had to explain and develop the volume formula for a graph function turned 360 degrees around the x axis .
Uh just thought of another question like the doppler one. What was the top speed of the planes again ?. If it is above about 320m/s a sonic boom would just be AMAZING. I cant remember any games ever having that. Maybe some of the flight sims I havent tried does ?. Heres a video theres a really good one just before 1 min in. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=d83_1202636707
not sure if this is the place for it, but an idea for a teaser for the aircraft version I had a while ago (which does use aircraft noise so a vague link) was: NF comm and possibly one or two nf light tanks get suprised by 2/3 imperial tanks, nf comm starts legging it while light tanks get destroyed. comm doing evasive driving and possibly smoking calls for air support, as picture fades out you have classic (ie cheesey) radio chatter about "on my way" etc and the sound of aircraft taking off. As a second part you could then have 2/3 planes coming from the direction the comm is heading and doing nasty things to the tanks (even scope for a twist with an alternate version showing an AA tank intercepting the planes and the tanks killing the comm). sorry for being a bit off topic (and for writing probabl awful ideas) but the sound is involved there. I just always liked the idea of something desparately trying to reach friendly units which are there to escort it (there are some war films there thats used, either as central or minor part mainly with ships tbh as they're slower). More on topic - dopler really ought to be in, but please make sure the sounds are muffled for the driver (ear protectors or some such) or it'd be hard to make planes sound good from the outside without making them deafen the pilot. I wouldn't bother with sonic booms though (just as personal preference - its quite a minor part, unlike dopler which is actually useful).
You've rode into the danger zone now it's time to aimlessly wander into the dangerzone NF Gunship - http://media.putfile.com/NF-Ground-Attack-Aircraft NF Fighter - http://media.putfile.com/NF-Fighter NF Bomber - http://media.putfile.com/NF-Bomber NF Dropship - http://media.putfile.com/NF-Dropship Ride into the dangezone demo - http://media.putfile.com/NF-dropship-demo Takeoff - www.empiresuniverse.com/ac/dropship_takeoff_sample.mp3
Er, we're missing the demo audio files for the blimps? I suggest a gentle *putf* *putf* *putf* sound for NF's and just rip the sound for a modern airship for BE.
