Well assuming you're autistic and don't mind using a program slightly less complex than hammer with controls slightly more advanced than zork.

controls in df make it impossible to play without dedicating several hours to fucking around with it or a cheat sheet printed out and on your desktop, or better yet, as your mouse pad.

The quote above is only true if you got a learning disability.

No it's pretty much true, it took me a day to simply learn how to control it. Of course I can do it more or less from memory now and it's quite fast, but in terms of accessibility and certainly in terms of placing large constructions (10x10 maximum what) the controls are utterly abysmal.

I tried once. After 3 hours and finally getting my first room, I forgot how I did it then promptly deleted the program from my computer.

Honestly you would probably be better off learning hammer, it is fun for basically the same reasons and is probably easier to use.

    indeed that is true.

I've had much more fun fucking things up in hammer than I ever had trying those type sof games.

Minecraft or garrysmod are also good options, as they are creative tools with easy interfaces.

Or you could play with lego, lego is awesome.

    Did that on tuesday.

Always put your important levers in the dining hall.

or in a room adjacent to the dining hall

i tend ot have several dining halls though, one for military, one for peasantry and one for commoners so that if one of the groups stars throwing a tantrum spiral its not the end of the world

Never had a tantrum spiral so I just throw everyone in the same 1000sqr foot dining cavern.

Also if you pack your dudes in they form friendships which as long as you don't lose a load of dwarfs will actually make them happier.

I've seriously had my dwarfs reach like 1000 happiness simply from being crammed in the same dirt hole as 20 other guys for most of the day.

thats nice, but once you start losing some social militarymen you will have a lot of unhappy dwarves

but then they sit down in the dining hall filled with masterpieces and artifacts while eating their Lavish meals...
    and BAM! instant super happiness.

also... my current embark zone is fucking dreadfull...

    RAIN! RAIN EVERYWHERE!
from the start of spring to the end of autumn it rains... the damn winter freeze everything into iceblocks but then the tiny water masses that used to be 1/7 or 2/7 turn into 7/7 water once its spring again...
But the problem is... since it rains... nothing evaporates... BUT THE WATER EXPANDS!

    Resulting in this (early SS):

And i decided to challenge myself by not making a underground fort and only use quarrys to extract stone and minerals...

    ...

    ...

After the first winter the quarry turned into a swimming pool.

I've lost numerous fortresses to tantrum spirals...
Probably because I keep em all bunched together, and when an attack comes i just rush with militia, which usually leads to a few deaths and wounded. Then starts the spiral...

build drainage lanes, basically just channels of 1-2 block wide every 5 or so blocks that channel the water into the nearest underground cave

if it freezes, all the water comes to a standstill, when it thaws the water should drain away

to get rid of the massive water you are currently suffering from i suggest making some kind of "sinkhole" system of 3/3 tunnels going straight up from the cave system

It's not very complicated, you just need a good teacher (like Drag he is awesome <3).
