I dont get why slowing down heavies would be less fun. Slowing down doesnt mean as slow as infantry. Just slower then Mediums would be enough. In many games, not only rts, strongest tanks are also the slowest. They anyways are used often because they make big boom. Which is most fun about tanks. If u want speed, buy a jeep.
Ofc you can last 20 min with a heavy, but you've to keep the average livetime of tanks in mind, and higher prices + longer research time gives you an earlier advantage if going fot meds, later the heavys should always be the better option, if they wouldnt be there wont be a point in researching heavys at all ... also please for the love/hatred of empires don't slow heavys down anymore then you already have, i personally don't want to see crawling battlestations, (and in reallity or other games big tanks are indeed slower then small tanks but they still go at 60-80 Kmh, and not 20 like in empires, yet meds are already faster then heavys ... my personal opinion is either speed up all smaller tanks or dont touch it at all)
or switch adv chassis with mediums, so right after mediums there's heavies, and maybe you can just up the research time of heavies by 30 s or so.
i think it would be better to make heavies be vulnerable to infantry. make heavies specialize in anti building/tanks by removing machine gun slot. medium tanks should have the 3slot MG slot. medium tanks should be average in tank to tank, tank to personel, and tank to buildings. i think giving mediums a 50cal HMG or DU HMG would suffice. we have to force tanks to take up certain niche and roles, and mediums dont have one. i still think that making mediums be heavy escorts would be nice.
The whole research tree needs an overhaul as well as the pricing system. Piecemeal changes to both have thrown the balance of the two out of wack.
I don't enjoy having to fight heavy tanks, researching heavy tanks, buying heavy tanks, driving heavy tanks, repairing heavy tanks and crashing heavy tanks in the current status-quo of ridiculous brinkmanship. I think Heavy Tanks should be, you know, heavy, with a top speed not significantly above infantry speed. Anyway, the main issue isn't top speed, it's acceleration. All the vehicles accelerate too quickly. Even the heavy tanks reach their top speed in less than 3 seconds. If there was more variation in the speed and acceleration of the tanks I think mediums would be much more useful.
Spoonguard: If you want less acceleration then try it by yourself. But make sure that heavies still can climb hills. The script files are here: empires\scripts\vehicle_engines.txt empires\scripts\nf\vehicles\ground\tankheavy\ empires\scripts\imp\vehicles\ground\tankheavy\ (Some values are in both script files. Maybe one developer can explain why.)
Wasn't this an issue with the com at one time? They made it go slow and it couldn't climb hills without giving it massive torque wich then allowed it to push tanks around easily. So they just gave it speed back.
Pretty much. Wind the acceleration down in the scripting and vehicles can't climb inclines. I assume it's down to the limitations of how the engine handles vehicles. The solution is flatter maps
Some of the script values are redundant. Everything used to be a lot more condensed. I can't remember which are the values which are actually used, but I think it's any files which aren't in sub folders which override the ones in the sub folders.
Normally you test scripts on your own server. But changing script values on a public server doesn't affect if someone can login or not. Some values are also effective for the clients and other values will be ignored.
They do have such a top speed thats true. But in order to fight most tanks halt, even halting they only reach 80% accuracy. Since I assume that the vehicle accuracy is not coded in a way to decrease whilst moving I suggested slowing vehicles down.
Transport capability for mediums. Like the IDF Merkava has. No spawning from it tho, just as with BE AFV. That way you can have a partyvan with some armor.
Usefull if you work as a team, thus in public games it's not worth to research it just for that reason, AFVs and APCs also offer transportation capabilities with just 1 plate armor less ..
other than removing cannon restrictions (2x stdcn) on mediums, i think that the tanks are fine as they are.
thats ridiculous Tanks are not fine, we never see mediums anymore, which is a shame cause meds are fun. make heavies heavier, slower, more expensive, take longer to research, and able to carry more weight (more weapons) and then BAM mediums are the metagame and heavies with end game weapons end games* *by virtue of being relatively stronger when mediums are the norm.
also, restrict individual chassis. like 5 heavies cap. or something like that. Increase the cost of heavy chassis as well.
