So how does this work exactly, we are ranked 2nd in Group G, is this grouping a way to devise brackets for the later games?
I don't follow sports except maybe like an occasional bears game.

If there's a tie during group stage.


The tied teams previously played each other. Who ever had won then; passes.
If it was a draw; It's usually the team with most goals or the best Goal differential.

Regardless of the result of their match. Who ever scored the most goals or has the best goal differential passes.





32 teams in the whole Tournament, 4 teams per group and 8 groups. The best 2 teams of Each group will move forward. That means a total of 16 teams will pass.

During the first Knock out stage. The best teams of each group will play the 2nd best team of a different group.

U.S Profile​

Getting through group G, which is nicknamed the group of death is not an impossible feat for the U.S after their win over Ghana. If they managed to pass...
The U.S would probably play vs the leader of the H group which is considered the weakest group along with the C group.

The U.S have realistic chances beyond the first knockout stage.
Yet will probably meet Argentina in stage 2. Good Luck.

They will probably meet the Netherlands/Chile, Mexico Costa Rica in Stage 3 but has slim chances of playing the Ivory coast too.
That being said if the U.S goes through the group stage that means Portugal is eliminated and Germany is on the opposite side of the elimination table and could only be met through the World Cup Finals.
France, Germany and Brazil will probably be on the same side. To be honest the U.S is better off passing through the group stage as a 2nd seed and end up on the weak side.

Germany, France, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Nigeria and Italy will probably end up on the same side and Eliminate themselves along with someone from group H.

While the U.S side would be much weaker and composed of: Argentina, Mexico, Netherlands, Ecuador, Cote D'ivoice, Belgium and Costa Rica along with someone from the H group.



I predict that France and Germany will meet in Stage 2. The winner will play Brazil in the semi-finals to play Argentina for the World Cup.
Bias favoritism aside Brazil vs Argentina is always a rivalry and would make for an awesome World Cup in Rio. (The finals will be played at Estádio do Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro)

And for the U.S to pass they must draw or defeat Portugal in order to maintain their 2nd place.

I was simply exploring the path to the world cup if everything went right for them (The U.S) and why it's ok for Americans to have their hopes up compared to previous years.

 

Because the only good team in it is Belgium.

Group C is the second weakest because Colombia is the only good team and its barely ahead of Belgium in power rankings. Both groups have a mediocre Cote D'Ivoire/Algeria. Russia is supposed to be quite strong but after their match with South Korea. I am in doubt. Though maybe it's South Korea that is stronger then expected.

Every other group has a major powerhouse Nation or at least 2 strong nations and generally stronger competition.

Group H might be stronger then previously thought. They haven't played many games. If Algeria can Finish second and rebound from their loss to Belgium. Then... yes... Group H is actually quite strong.
Still everyone who doesn't end up on the Brazil, France or Germany Knockout side, will have a much easier time reaching the World Cup.

 

Because the only good team in it is Belgium
