the whole vmf needs an overhaul. Drummer has volunteered to use the layout I came up with and remake the map from scratch with the optimization. Just for the record, this time it wasn't my fault :D
mesa is a really really good looking map, i don't know what people are talking about, its fucking cool and should be included. i say err on more rather than less maps, there are some seriously good maps that arent official. any map in this thread that no one has pointed out really big flaws should make it, arguments of "I dont like it" should be ignored, as they are bullshit. and it would be cool and gimmicky to include one joke map officially, because people would hear about it and be all "wtf coolsauce gotta 4chan my hard drive and bone me some empires n shit." - a good candidate for this would be empirescup. "tank soccer? awesome!"
I don't think you need to remake the map, just make sure all doors/windows have areaportals, place some hint brushes, and possibly func_detail some not rectangular brushes. If Drummer really wants to remake the map he can, but I don't think its necessary.
Most people I've talked to didn't like the version of Shadows that was a giant circle - namely because teams would get into the habit of capturing in circles of one another and the game would never end because flags didn't need to be captured in order. I feel that rc10a is the only version of Shadows I've ever liked - and at that, I like it quite a lot, but never get to play it because players are whiny little whiners. Shadows rc10a is a revers tug-of-war, and that's what I really like about it.
Yeah exactly the RC9 shadows was more running around and capping then actual fighting but I wonder if it would be different with 48/64 players. I have the same issue with shadows that I have with homeland. Great fun maps but seem more like hl2 maps.
almost every none official map kills the server cause people are afraid to play maps they dont have memorized completly. People blame the new map if they lose cause its the easiest target.
No, they blame the comm. I played a round of escort where someone blamed the comm, and I mean seriously, he wasn't joking.
People like officials more than customs because they don't have to wait 10 min to download the map. I think you all underestimate the laziness of the average Empires playerbase.
tru dat all empires maps are like 15 mb+ so waiting sux when all you get is this screen showing tips and tricks(such as nine mining) or really crappy excerpts out of someones personal journal.
DING! QFT Also, most would rather download them all beforehand. And not have to wait 10 minutes between maps while the rest of the players are in the game to download a new map.
Which is why glycencity and urban chaos is so loved? I'm mean this may be true to a certain extent but let's not get carried away with ourselves here
I receive regular complaints about custom maps in cycle - but tbh, I have grown apathetic to the "we have to download!" complaint, because one of the main means of survival for the mod is the introduction of new content, most of which is brought about in the form of new maps (be they serious business or silly mapping experiments ^_^). If someone joins Server X & encounters a map download and then cancels and joins another server, it's very likely that within minutes they'll be confronting another map download - bottom line is, they're going to have to get the maps one way or another, so when they encounter the dl, they may as well let it run. Other players who are tired of the same maps over and over (veterans especially) will be yielded to much more than lazy players. Each of the main popular servers have very fast redirects. It boils down to whether or not people want to broaden their horizons - I think the majority of us do, even those of us who may not realize it yet. I am happy that the official maps in their revamped forms (at least those that have been/will be completed in time) are going into 2.25, and I hope that some great customs will make it into 2.25 as well. Downloading maps is a fact of life in the world of online gaming - especially in mod communities. To expect anything less is grossly naive, especially after all these years of everyone playing various source games and mods and having to download maps 15-20% of the time. Too bad, I say, because custom content drives modding - the mod itself is custom content in the first place. If anyone wants to complain about downloading anything, they should cancel their download of the client before hand and: problem solved. /end rant I would like to see emp_money and emp_urbanchaos possibly removed from official status and return them to custom status, unless their improvements prove to be fruitful. Glycencity can be fun, although it seldom is. If I'm not mistaken, I believe money & urbanchaos aren't in the default mapcycle.txt when someone sets up a fresh server, but I could be mistaken. I am perfectly fine with these maps staying though, after all whether we like it or not, they are a part of Empires and always have been. Anyway, I look forward to what the map collection will be in 2.25.
1. You put custom maps on, people whine about what they feel are fail customs and that people have to download them. 2. If you run all stock maps, people whine about playing the same maps over and over again. It's a catch 22. Server admins just pick whichever option they like, since people will whine regardless.
The installer is already ungodly bighuge. Marginal size increase per map is negligible and would be worth the amount of additional content. Just throw in more maps. Just say that the installer comes with community maps. Valve adds official maps to TF2 once in a while, but they have plenty of nonbroken community maps.
