Yes, market saturation in the West is a big problem for smartphone makers. That's why Apple cramps all these gimmicks like the fingerprint sensor and a motion chip into the new iPhone 5s. (not 5S, because that looks too much like SS or something) Hamster, we need you in the Syria thread to explain to us why Obama got enlightened and now follows the advice of George W.!
And Apple shares are down 6%, serves those greedy bastards well. http://www.google.com/finance?cid=22144
When you trick people into thinking your shit is magical and then the laws of physics decide to kick in, you look like a goof ball.
Same thing happened with the iPhone 5. Stocks rocketed like every Apple fanboy's erection and dropped greatly after release.
I honestly couldn't care 2 shits about the specs of a phone. All that matters to me is that is feels comfortable in my hands and has an attractive design. Thats why I got an iphone5, its the best looking phone imo and doesn't have shitty plastic body that most other phones do. I don't care if there are android phones with more ram or faster processors. All I do on my phone is talk, text, email and web-browsing. Oh and sometimes Ill play some vice city on the train going to work. Too bad the new iphone they just announced looks awful. I guess its supposed fit in with the look of ios7, which for reason is designed to look like a childrens' colouring book.
The dirty little secret is that Foxconn (Apple's production contractor) provides some of the most valued manufacturing jobs in China. Think about it, which sweatshop is going to pay more, the one making $500+ phones or the one making ~$50 shoes? Making a phone is a lot tougher than a shoe, so those workers need a lot of training as well. Training is expensive, so Foxconn doesn't want to lose a worker. And even still, sweatshops are pretty good jobs for people in China and related areas. The alternatives are truly horrible. There's a neat documentary on the subject. I remember that there are signs outside Foxxconn's plant telling people to never pay anyone for a supposed guarantee for a Foxxconn job. Maybe those signs are propaganda, but they definitely made my cold heart feel a pang of doubt. tl;dr Foxconn jobs are awesome.
Just because they're "relatively" good job doesn't relieve them of responsibility towards their employees. Besides, why would I care if they're the best jobs in China? They're in *China*, not over here.
The suicide rates at Foxconn's facilities are no more or less than the suicide rates of the rest of the population.
I don't need to work in a factory to tell you that it's a fuckload better than subsistence farming. That's the alternative for most employees of Foxconn and similar facilities. Working long hours is a hell of a lot nicer than almost starving every year before the harvest.
