It certainly runs, there's just unfortunate sideeffects like lack of transparency. Usually only mods have any problems though, presumably backwards compatibility is more important to Valve than most modders. See also The Hidden.
I somehow misread your sentence for "couldn't handle" what kind of sentence is that, could handle... I blame you! for my mistake! hah there
To be honest, I love it when a game improves both graphics AND frame rate. All hail the dev team! I actually turned bumpmapping and specular back on, aside from leaving all my details maxed out in the in-game settings (aside from MSAA and ASF. I think I've got 2xMSAA and 4xASF set or something weird like that, doesn't matter too much). My frame rate at least DOUBLED in buildings, which was quite pleasing. This is aside from some of the new, nicer-looking guns and the cool new hands and such, of course. I've only got a standard 6800GT, too. None of that 512 meg special edition crap. Don't need it. All hail 256 megs of texture memory goodness! To be honest, if Empires can run playably on full settings on a graphics card that is two major version steps behind (for nVidia), then you all need to quit whining. This IS backwards compatability! This IS running on old hardware! Oh, and monkey? Stock cooling sucks. Live with it. I've got a VF700Cu on my 6800GT, doesn't whine a bit when I'm playing Empires. No heating issues. With stock cooling, you're probably pushing 90C or more. Please realize that your 6800GT is quite a damn bit more powerful than a 9600. It's doing quite a bit more work. Quite a darn bit more.
kila: unfortunately the wiki is down but there was a list on what you could do. I suggest searching the forum, there's a lot of tweaks somewhere around here *running empires on a Club3d 6600GT stock cooled, overclocked and absolutely NO heat problems
Ya i just dled 1.08 RC9 it rocks the only problem is cursor you aint see it until you move it and even then it is a bit flashy but i can live with that
