Better for who's under its cover or the enemy shooting them? Discuss. Methinks depends on the situation, if you don't need to shoot the enemy down and are focusing on the enemy building, a smoke cover for the enemy is always great, because you can always shoot them when they pop out of cover. Or you can just spam like hell, and confuse the enemy where you ACTUALLY are.
I've never used smoke as a disappearing act. Only to give cover/lag people's computer through smoke spam.
It's not an instant vanish act.. It slowly comes on.. Its used for pissed off people on district to grief people who are having fun..
When under smoke, your vision is fogged. You can't see. If you can't see, shooting is useless. If you can't see, moving is useless. Even if you exit the smoke, your vision unfogs slowly, leaving you vulnerable. The only reason smoke is good for retreat is because nobody with a brain will want to follow you into it. =P
Yea, but in a large map, the fog is not large enough for it to be that effective. The only time i see smoke is useful is if you are storming the enemy's base and you know there will be infantry arriving over there to try and stop you. What you do is you throw the smoke and it will be really confusing for the enemy to run around and see what happen to their base unless they are looking down from a hill. Smoke is only effective when you know there's a lot of walls/rocks/buildings around, so it's effective because people will tend to get more slowed down because of it, especially when there are like 4-5 smoke cloud all over a specific region of the map.
I don't understand smoke, it makes no sense. If you drop it for your own cover, you can't shoot at anything. If you throw it at the enemy forces, you can't see them. Either way, nobody's gaining anything but rage.
But I've learned getting ammo increase, and spamming smoke while getting more smokes from an ammo box makes for a great distraction for your team and theirs.
Smoke is best when combined with sensors, turrets, or comm targeting, since none of those are fooled by it. Or enhanced senses, I guess. Smoke + camera can be extremely effective.
Nah, it's harder than you think to shoot at the orange diamonds, you don't know whether they have cover or not.
That's why you use it in a fairly open area or a corridor (many parts of Escort are good for this.) And while, sure, it isn't as easy as actually being able to see them, they can't aim at you at all. If you know the area, you can usually guess what cover they're using, too. At least, it's worked for me many times in the past.
The epic game of escort we had the other day I blame due to not one of the three people on the flag looking consistently at the ammo box. Seriously what is with people and looking at the sky these days?
smokes are one of the most useful grenades. chuck them on a friendly turret and the enemies won't be able to target it. chuck a few around to hide in if a tank comes past, this works especially well with hide, as you can chuck the smokes and hide elsewhere. i've done that several times, seriously. at the end of the day, smokes just block line of sight, so chucking a row of them between you and the enemy gives you time to move around to an ambush spot, or protect players that could be flanked... i havn't seen it used so much though because it doesn't have any "immidiate" bonuses.
And also because scouts aren't that useful overall. Smoke is a good thing if used right, sure, but (outside of a few offbeat maps like Escort, say) it's not enough to make the scout useful on their own.
You seem to have the notion that all scouts are dumb shits with a sniper rifle and a conc grenade, please observe me next time I play crossroads.
