How about putting in a delay between pressing the "chute" button and the "chute" actually opening? That way you would have to consider your altitude while flying, because if you tried to bail too close to the ground you would die, but it would still be useful in emergencies. It'd also be somewhat more realistic.

what about not having parachutes on actuall people but have them for jeeps and light tanks... so you had to be in one of these to be dropped from height. otherwise you would have too land...

Hmm Nice idea FalconX, but what if the chute could be opened any time they wanted BUT The chute would slow them down slowly, until they reach "Terminal Velocity" and would land safley, but if they open the chute too late, they find that their speed is far from favorable; and would end up a nice puddle?

doesn't sound tooooo bad. but no firing / reclosing when you're decending, and there should be a slight pause when you hit the ground to get out of your 'chute. it would be cool if the chute could stay on the ground for a while as well, so patrols could see where the scout landed. unless he could pull it with him into a corner..... :D

The parachutes for the NF should have a one in five chance of not deploying.

Don't list it in the changelog or the manual, either. Just let players figure it out on their own.

I really like the idea of pilots having to set down, for me, it's just so much more exciting and intense.

If there was a pause after landing from a "parachute," in order to simulate disconnected the heavy device from yourself, it would make landing the best choice in a heavily contested infantry area. For this to work, of course, the dropship would need to be very heavily armored. So you'd be able to customize the dropship to be light, fast, and manuverable, to get in, paradrop people, and get out, or to be heavy and lumbering, but well armored enough to make landing in a contested area viable.
Simply alternate strategies, you could either come in, land, and have the infantry jump out ready to go, or fly in, drop them, and force them to wait a few critical seconds before engaging.

The problem ive found with spawning in planes in 2142 is that you do it, then die as the plane has been abandonned for some reason or another

Parachutes could be researchable in the infantry tech tree at the armory.

    Oh wait...

mabey they just have to be "equiped" at an armoury, free of charge. so if you prepare for your assualt, you can go right in and do a jump, but if people are spawning in the airborn vehicle, or you have loads of people, you would have to land em.

What about special smoke grenades, that will be fired after leaving a plane in air? So the leaving person can land unseen ;)! <-- <.< my grammar is terrible!

So... just shoot into the smoke.
I don't think that would work as well as it does on the ground. :(
