Ok guys, some questions for ya. Im looking at building myself a new comp pretty soon but i want to hand down my current one to my wife (so she will stop stealing mine to play games  ) and dont want to go through the hassle of upgrading to PCI-E, which would consist of replacing the Mobo, processer and Vid card. Ive done a little searching on NewEgg looking at the AGP cards there and the reviews but im at a slight fork. I dont know if i want to go 512mb card or a 256mb card. Both are realitivly inexpensive and have similar specs (the ones i looked at both had 12 pipelines) so im kinda stumped. Does the extra RAM really make that much of a difference? Here are a couple that caught my eye: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814103005 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814141026 <== This is probably the one i'd buy for the 512mb catagory. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102017 <== This looks like a good 256mb card to me http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102666 Those were the ones i was debating on when decided to ask you guys for advice. If you know of any cards similar feel free to suggest them as well. PS: Stumbled across this when looking at the 256mb cards http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814133125 IF it wasnt for hte price id get it. and i have only one word for the specs GODDAMN!!! UPDATE!!! Here is a couple more 512mb cards that i overlooked that are better than the ones above http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102680 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814103005 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150155
Depending on a game the extra VRAM/GDDR3 will make a difference, for example COD2 gets huge gains from having 512MB GDD3 instead of 256MB. And considering that the new games use a lot of different texturemaps(normalmaps, specularitymaps, etc.) and they eat up memory as well as HDR stuff, I'd say go with 512MB.
yeah i have a quistion im going to buy a new video card money is no option what should i get? i want the best btw
SGT. MIKE: GeForce 7950 GX2 if you don't want to be bound to a mobo, but want the dual core goodness(I think the supply is quite limited atm). If you have a SLI mobo, you can always get two SLI GeForce 7900 GTX 512MB cards.
So the 512mb cards are worth it. Anyone have any suggestions on a card I should get or are the ones i posted good enough? Oh and Sgt. Mike, if money is no option check the last link i posted and there is your card.
well personally id say wait for dx10. But if you are not gonna wait or buy a computer then. If you're not gonna wait I suggest you buy the cheapest of the 2, but if you find a cheap 7800 id buy that, they arent very expensive atm either.
I've built quite a few computers, and I'm tempted to do it for a living. But due to finances, I'm currently using a Radeon 9600, thus I will hang my head in shame and remove myself from this thread. D;<
Dont feel bad, atm your better than I. (Radeon 9550 ) And Dizzy, this is going to be handed down to my wife once i get myself a new comp and she is nowhere near as hardcore gamer like i am. Shes happy as long as she can play WoW decently. For myself im going all out (finances providing) for my new system. I just want to upgrade this one as much as possible before passing it on.
A really good and cheap card I'm using is a Radeon 9600, roughly $100, lacks only in textures and FPS (but you still get more then the naked eye can see) and it still competes with recent cards.
HA. Call it laziness on my part for not researching and summarizing it myself. And by the by, twenty frames per second is commonly considered the lowest you can get in an online FPS without it becoming unplayable.
