1. The number of classes will always be 4 2. A Flamethrower is to hard for the dev team to program using the Source SDK.
Nah, it's not really that hard to create a flamethrower, it's just that Empires uses very large maps; close combat is only seen on small infantry maps such as escort, urbanchaos and district. Adding a weapon that only really works on one gametype seems rather useless.
Now actualy thats what they told me. I would like the Flamethrower. But for what unit would it be? Grenadier = Anti-Vehicle, Anti-Building Engineer = Fortfying Positions, builings Sturctures and Destroying enemy Buildings. Rifleman = Countering other infantry Scout = Can Stun Vehicles, Dissable Buildings, Snipe People, the only use the socut has is to ennoy the other team :/\ Maybe the Flamethrower should be a greandier weapon. And you could choose between having a Missile Launcher or a Flamethrower.
You contradict yourself greatly at this point. flame throwers have already been discussed extensively, and shot down.
I have said that I understand that the dev team will not and is impossible to create the flame thrower. But that doesnt mind I wouldnt like it to be in the game.
Flamethrowers are not at all hard to make. Eternal Silence has them, other mods have them, hell, there is a server plugin somewhere that gives you them! I agree however, it wouldn't work in empires, however awesome. Plasma however really should ignite stuff it hits and in its blast radius, and disintregate infantry it kills... :D Give it a short lived burn effect on vehicles, that stacks. That would make plasma worth researching... ... if maybe a little overpowering. Nukes should blast people to ash as well. For 2.3, I guess...
The Problem is not making the flamethrower. The problem is making it fit in Empires and actualy balance it.
I have a better idea: Tanks that overheat should burst into flame. Plasma should also set things on fire. Sticky stun grenades should be renamed to plasma stickies. They should also set things on fire.
I suppose you could have some sort of short range plasma beam weapon for tanks, powerful but requiring the enemy to get right in close, sort of like a cross between a deconstruction beam and a plasma cannon. Although I think it would work better as a short range pulse beam of energy rather than a constant stream. Really though short ranged weapons aren't a good idea, stickies work but that's about it, and that's mainly because they're stealthy and also fire/forget, you throw it and you can be legging it to safety before it even lands.
Real-world flamethrowers are actually not short range weapons (at least, not as short range as they're usually portrayed.) They're like fire hoses, only spraying fire (or more properly, burning chemicals) instead of water -- so you can fire them in an arc and burn things from a ways away. They're also not simply anti-infantry weapons. In fact, they're really anti-structure (or anti-cover) weapons; they'd be primarily appropriate for the engineer, if they're added. Have it do decent but a bit slow damage to both buildings and infantry, and heat tanks a bit (but the infantry damage and tank heat would not be enough to be extremely powerful -- the primary use would be for buildings and for forcing enemies out of cover.) I'm not saying we should do it, and anyway that's all realism which doesn't matter. I'm not sure I see what it would add to the game, either. But what I'm saying is, it doesn't have to be the close-range anti-infantry weapon people are talking about... if people can think of a reason for an anti-structure weapon like that, anyway.
