Limiting targets would be a bad idea. With an absolute number people would shout that commander should give them targets and not other players. And with a limit per player people would shout that commander should give targets more precise, which will result in even more targeting work for the commander. Why does everybody ignore that we have engi cameras. Therefore commander targets can stay disabled and the minimap should be reverted to 2.25b.
As much as I'd like a better system, including something for the commander to do, SIP's idea isn't bad.
Range of site would be good. You give targets then when those targets leave bam they are gone. Even building targets for example if someone is standing next to a ref and u want them to destroy it commander hsould be able to right click and have someone attack that target.
You know what i mean common sense... If someone goes behind a building obviously you cant see them. Once they are out of your view they are gone. Sorry range of common sense site then close combat ect.
Line of sight, not range of sight.... there is not a good way for the game to detect how far you can see other than what is rendered. So, that's not really possible in empires maps. 90% of the map that you can see is being rendered at all times on any given normal com map.
how about a set distance from the player? I dont mind the pulsative that has to be recharged. Im all forgivingthe commander more gadgets toplay with, i have been getting down with the commander role as of late!
metalsmiths argument is still valid (start a private server, enable cheats, turn on mat_wireframe 1 or 2, youd be suprised how little visblocking there is). also having the server check for "real visibilty" for each individual player would be really taxing and wed be forced to play empires 4vs4 or smthg at max
The range of sight should can be clarified with a minor fog of war graying effect around informational deadzones on the minimap. This would be supplemented with visual radii of detection devices.
One issue is that your blindspots are extremely undefined. Fog of war would assist in closing all the gaps possible. One new function for scout enhanced senses could be spotting enemy lines of sight/radii/etc.
We are looking at a fake dilemma here. There is a middle ground between "massive, wall-hack target spam" & "powerless commanders": Give commanders the ability to give move/attack location/defend orders. Commanders can visually direct players to the locations they need to go. It is extremely difficult to command a team, even with a mic, because most non-vet players need visual-aid to play as a team. Without any type of visual guide, a majority of the Empires players will run around the map like headless chickens. If you're looking at expanding the popularity of the game, you cannot assume that every game will be full of competent players with sufficient knowledge of the game, being led by charismatic vets with mics as squad leaders/commanders. If there is no in-game guide (no one reads manuals; hint boxes are insufficient) for new players to learn the gameplay of this mod, they'll just end up uninstalling it.
errr commanders can do that, all 3 (but defend only for buildings) or is my english too bad and you meant something else?
try? move orders -> just rightclick on the ground attack location -> hold a while rightclicking on the ground (!doesnt work on buildings or units, so you have to attack order next to them!) defend order -> rightclick building
