I've always thought that the massive maps should incorperate large spaces AND close up combat on the scale of district. so a massive map might have two semi prebuilt (i.e, no radar, vf or air factory, but turrets and brush based walls) bases, while in the middle there would be something that focuses the infantry combat. other wise it will become a game of "get aircraft, fight your way to place, try to do something like capture as an infantry without ever encountering more than one other infantry on either team, die, repeat" one of the joys of empires is that the teams work together so well, because they are together. I'm worried that over 70 islands the action is going to be spread very thin. that sounds like a planetside map, and those have thousands of players on them.
meh wouldnt fit.. More like huge map balancing troubles :D Also try making it fun to drive over huge, long bridges.. I mean long as in 1 min+ drive (with 3phase) to get from one end to the other... EDIT: what we need is a navy :D
Why not just jury rig some enormous pontoons on the bottom of light tanks and duke it out? BLIMPS + PONTOONS FTW!
(I think you mean auxiliary.) Yeah and there would be three of them. The main server handles on corner of the map and the three other servers would handle other corners of the map so the map would be cutted to four server in total. When you go enough far on the map you would get to changed to another server. :D That would be one huge map then.
So you want to make it into an MMO? Why would this hurt the server any worse than a regular map? It's the exact same size.
yes, and I remember a mod for HL that tried this and failed horribly.. can't recall the name though, but it was meant to be a "reallife" MMORPG
1/16th maps are scaled down maps, it would have a very similar load to a map that uses the same size on normal scale.
Badge of Blood, they moved to Unreal... which makes no sense, they got scaling working but gave up...
I wasn't talking about that one.. It was a mod that later merged with another mod to become a "realistic" warfare mod.. They already had the server hopping and menus and a lot of the interactions with NPCs, so I've always wondered why they gave up...
Sooo.... Did I get this right now? In 1/16 maps the displacement and all the other things remain as big as they are in the hammer but the props are much smaller so when the player hops into the map he isn't normal sized anymore but 16x smaller than normally should be?
In short, yes. Obviously displacements will have to be made more detailed in certain areas, to stop it from looking too kryten-like.
Alright. I could use that information how to do it because I'm planning to do a map but I have already ran out of grid size in hammer. :p :D
