Have you tried any of the custom maps that are still in beta? Just the other day I was on the training server (I think) and the map rotation included a bunch of custom ones. A few were bad (my own humble opinion of course) but others were simply phenomenal. The latest "Sinking Feeling" is a great fun map, and even in its current "beta" state has a definite replayability value.

Yeah thats true alot of them are pretty cool(unique too) I have yet to play sinking feeling but I played the down hill jam(i think its called) and my first impression was.. this sucks, but I played it more and it was kind of fun in a goofy way.. That vehicle training map has come along way and is actually a really good looking map(but I think favors BE because of duel rails) and also shadows because its kind of what canyon cdr was suppose to be like.. I will try sinking when I can

keep up the great work mappers :D

Personally I prefer "classic" maps to District402, but I know a lot of people love it. You're right when you say Empires skills and classes are awesome. I don't think many mappers are working on infantry-only maps, so borrowing a couple of the better DoD:S maps might be a good idea. Even it if's not a simple conversion, popular maps are popular for a reason.

Clearly we wouldn't want to get in trouble with Valve, but I'm sure there's some fair-use clause in copyright law, as long as it's not a systematic process of ripping off every DoD:S map one by one.

As for Empires maps, I know of 21:

Wouldn't we all need to actually own DOD:S in order for it to be legal then?

You could remake them from scratch

lol @ Solokiller and his map copyright rage. Who cares, seriously, about map copyright. What wouldn't be nice is if we took the map, insulted the author everywhere, then uploaded it remotely to everyones DODS folder.

But no, Solokiller wants us to respect the mapper who made it and not use his map even though mappers make maps so people can play on it. That makes sense.

It seems acceptable as long as we give credit to the original author. We would not be stealing the maps. We would just be just using them for Empires and practically propagating their popularity.

Another option is using layouts of maps from other maps. For example, in Insurgency mod, I've played a remake of dust2 that works with INS gameplay. Making simple maps with familiar layouts can't be too difficult. We still play emp_money even if it's aesthetically lacking. Empires should look into more infantry specialized "orange" (bare-bones "conceptual" maps that won't take a million years to download) maps to test out gameplay design (and for the sake of just making more god damn maps to play on). If a map is fun, then it should be expanded in a more aesthetically pleasing version.

(Insurgency also has good maps to steal.)

I was porting Tabula (a map from TA:Spring) and focussed on trying to get a working map together, I shared some screens on IRC and grizzly abused me for about an hour and a half about how ugly it was.

I gave up the next day :(

So much for gameplay over looks

If it's from scratch like an orange map, it's alright. if it's a fugly port of another map, eh.

It had basic grass textures and tried to make it look decent.

ah, another person who believed me.

I was the one who told people 2.12 maps didn't work. Most do, they just spam the server console so we prefer not to host them. But due to empires upcoming demise, we decided that we could put up with it. I just had nfescort2 from Mayama running yesterday, and we ran isle and SoF 2.12 for ages. So actually, you suck. Also, the new Vmex supposedly decompiles perfectly.

Why bother converting DOD maps to Empires, when you can just go find a DOD server?
