Gundams are fucking awesome that, and Evangelion. The newer releases of Evangelion are much better. shorter but, AWESOME! ohh and Full Metal Alchemist is cool too.
Flimsy. Uneconomical. Needlessly complicated for fucking space combat. loads of points of failure (Nearly 12 joints total for the limbs). Expensive as fuck. Sturdy. Cheap. Designed for it's purpose (rough terrain combat, particularly rubble in urban environments), few points of failure (only 8 joints), 100 minerals 50 vespene. Fuck your gundams.
Empty, the goliath was loosely inspired by an anime called Escaflowne, which was like Steampunk lord of the rings meets mechs. In the first Starcraft, the hero unit Alan Schezar was named after a character in that anime.
Would you be better off having only 8 joints left? im sure the Gundam fans can arrange it. Setting aside the fact that making a robot look human is cool, and that we are talking about mostly fictional objects, the gundam was made for ANY environment. The goliath was made for one environment. When having a singular environment in mind it is easy to leave out things not needed and make your project cheaper and/or sturdier for that environment. Lets see the golioth work in space. Lets see it work in the ocean. Lets see it get on its belly and sneak around. ohh... it can't? ohhh ya... some missing limbs. I see a point of failure for your goliath. It looks like an easy kill.
My favorite kind of Mech is from the Armored Core game series. Though they use lots of different kinds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0MmsXdgszA&feature=related
Oh no, they halifax have got the plastic awl ohver. Yah never know if yeh ned to send it back. Why on earth does the guy sound like Dr.Evil, now movies are going to come out where the derp Canadian stereotype comes out doing Dr.Evil accents.
At what point is it useful or even necessary to make something look like a human. Also "get on its belly and sneak around." how the fuck is your gundam going to do that, it's 1000 tons of steel. Not the stealthiest thing in the universe.
because. No really making it look human makes it fairly intuitive to operate. You would have a fairly good general idea on its capabilities just on sight alone. Althoigh it may be true for the goliath too(Move forward, aim, shoot). Making it look human can also make it a more fearful to the enemy. Japanese warlords used to dawn incredible looking masks when in combat to make themselves look more like a great evil demon. In making a machine look more human your prey will attribute human aspects to it and fear it. Well I will admit I did not give the context to what I meant there. I was thinking of crawling over a ridge to snipe a distance or in an urban setting ducking down/cralwing to be just over the height of homes and such to do long range attacks.
