Detonation from destruction on vehicles

    Hops, blows into pieces, doesn't matter. The purpose of the effect is for two big reasons:
    1: Give the player who destroyed is some form of satisfaction for doing so.
    2: Announce to others that the vehicle, in fact, died.

    The 1.07 way (basically just turning black) didn't really do either. However the leaping into the air I find to be quite satisfying and sometimes hilarious.

    My only suggestions as far as destroyed vehicles goes is make it a tad more obvious that it's destroyed post-leap. What about those nice destroyed models sitting in Escort?

    Keep the hop; This is turning into a realism vs gampley thread... in any case gameplay should win every single time... in 1.07 its hard to tell when a tank is really dead; i sometimes shoot it once too many times wasting precious ammo and time while there is another tank... the jump in 1.08 gives a clear indication even from a far "Target Is down, proceed to next target"

    Keep the hop...

    I'd just like to point out, some new players in 1.08 still shot the dead tanks after they have jumped around. I watched a few new players go at a dead tank with gusto, blasting it constantly with rockets and mortars while other living tanks attacked them. They just didn't get the hint from the "jump" effect.

    Lol, I've seen that too, but there is no bug/gameplay fix for client-side stupidity.

    The hop should stay, no doubt about that. The real question is should it be changed?

    Make it more dramatic, have the tank catch on fire and do barrel rolls down the road as it crushes infantry under it.

    Or just keep the little hop and turn the models to really look like dead as in the Escort map as Vader6 said. At least I would like to see tanks to be bit more destroyed looking rather than just turning black and making a small hop.

    the hop won't be neccessary when we get destroyed vehicle models with flames and bits of them coming out, (like destroying an APC in HL2 or a vehicle in Halo2). but until then it is neccessary. is that right?

    Or like the exploding tanks from CoD II, explosions rock in the far run, but for now, the hop is good.

    Keep tanks on the ground and hop the turret, the body's really heavy, you know. I don't see why jeeps shouldn't hop though. :D

    perhaps, along those lines, have it visually cripple. the turret explodes, the treads collapse, etc.

    My cousin's a tanker in Iraq, and he says tanks rarely explode. They are designed, these days, with systems which keep fire and heat as far from the ammunition as possible, so unless the actual ammo is hit, the tank rarely bursts into a gigantic fireball with flying parts everywhere.

    Generally, oil smoke (black and thick) from burning hydraulics and engine components, but not necessarily exploding ammo, pours from the tank accompanied by huge flames (still no explosion) from the burning gas. The easiest way to tell, however, is the bailing of the crew, according to my cousin, because when a tank is killed its crew isn't necessarily crispy, but its crew DOES know that their tank can no longer shoot, move, and is, in fact, on fire. So...yeah. You get the idea.

    That's the realism side. As for my opinion, I find a flying NF light tank to be hilarious. Even if its black.

    That's because (according to Wikipedia) the M1 Abrahms has tons of safety features, stuff that is MADE to keep the ammo from "cooking off," and if it does cook off, it's in a different compartment from the crew area. Other tanks, like the Russian T-90, have the ammo in the same area so if it cooks off you're royally screwed. But I'm no expert--everything I ever learned about tanks I learned on teh intertoobs.

    However, the jump into the air effect looks awesome and adds to the game. Even if it isn't realistic :D Who cares? It looks cool (much better than 1071)

    since empires follows the 'fuck realism' system, any chance of tanks exploding into fireballs of flying shrapnel? nothing physical, purely visible, but much more satisfying to see when you kill a tank.
