Do you like it? I made it emphasizing 4 things:

    1. It mimics the design of the NF Flag
    2. It explicitly displays a -genetic modification tanks type thingy- that people can understand.
    3. It is not ridiculously high like the current one and it roughly follows the shape of the BE barracks
    4. You can walk on top of it, but a vehicle can't really get up there.

    Things I already realize:
-The spacing isn't -dead- perfect. That's ok, that can be fixed when the model is made.
-The colours look awful. See above.
-Those TANK things don't match the current buildings. That's also ok, I plan on doing concept art for a few more buildings too.
-The structural ribs on the side kind of look like the brenodi barracks. Well they were already from the same faction, so a small resemblance wouldn't be a stretch.

    Comments , please.

There's a lot of issues with this, but mostly just conceptual wise.

First off, the ladder, cannot be made within a model, so it either has to be a stair, or you have to make it a stair with very small spacing inbetween to simulate a ladder (that only allows up)

Secondly, BE is the faction that is genetically modified.

and finally, this design is just somewhat too radical in my opinion, and to me it's out of place, but otherwise it's good.

NF are the gene freaks in the story, they modified there dna over the ages to create a stronger and healthier person over generations

    WRONG FAGGET.
    BE use nanotechnology.
    NF use Viagra.

It's been said before, can't believe a modeller hasn't done it yet because it would get instantly implented....put a ladder on the existing rax...

We haven't done it yet because you can't, you can't have ladders on buildings, you were told that at the beginning of the thread.

Conceptually it doesn't make a great deal of sense.

Why would you make something with that weird shape? I can't think of a reason other than 'because it looks interesting' which isn't a practice you usually expect to find in military buildings.

Why are the fragile glass tubes of goo on the outside of the heavily fortified building?

Assuming that door is just high enough to go through and will fit two people side by side (which it will if it's high enough to go through) then the building seems to be twice as long as the existing raxes and possibly 1.5 times wider.

That -weird- shape is suppose to look like the northern faction insignia, and maybe that is their design preference ;) . But seriously, it is a structurally sound building; it is heavily fortified at the front, and has to bear the weight of the genetic-engineering tanks on the back (which , just because they are green, doesn't mean they are fragile) so there is a cross member structure. The stretching/scaling of it is because of the view angle.

It's CONCEPT art. So, conceptually, I think it does make sense, because a concept doesn't have to make sense to be a good concept, and 'making sense' is an arbitrary saying anyways. You mean to say it doesn't technically make sense, because there are things about it you wouldn't find in our architecture.

Our sense of aesthetics are of course relative to our society, and by logical extension, our planet. This is a computer GAME, and these are ALIENS. Just because OUR military wouldn't do that because they've adopted a very pragmatic design sense, doesn't mean some other army wouldn't somewhere else in the galaxy. It can still therefore look REAL. It does obey the laws of physics and is structurally sound.

As for the ladder, I was pretty sure we couldn't do it, but I threw it in anyways. You can mount that top part from the front angled girders.

stars look... odd. Would be just as good to have the NF logo/flag graffitied on the side rather than 3D stars.

They do look odd. And it would be graffiti. I just didn't feel like going that complex on the concept art.

    Thanks for the comment.

It is being PLAYED by people from our society and our planet, therefore it needs to make sense to those people, it needs to have some logic behind it.

You can't just make something that makes no sense and then say 'it's not supposed to make sense, it's ALIENS!!!!'. That's a crap excuse.

If it doesn't obey the laws of common sense why should it obey the laws of physics? Why doesn't empires have bizzaro-physics where everything has no mass? Because it would be fucking retarded is why, it would make no sense.

I think you are missing the point of what concept art is. Concept art should show exactly what the structure looks like, before it's modelled, because drawings can be done faster than models of a similar quality. If you don't feel like putting the effort in you aren't going to be much help.

People also play games where they play as incredibly large bald men who talk about their lunch, they dogfight and fly around in spaceships, and small crabs jump out and latch onto your face. This is game, it doesn't need logic. This is a game in development, and the developers don't necessarily have to go with realism, nor have I understood this game to be the epitome of realism.

Yes, you can. That's like saying being a wizard is a crap excuse for Harry Potter to shoot magic out of his wand. Or being a sith lord is a crap excuse for Emperor Palpatine to shoot lightning out of his hands. That is what fiction is all about.

There is no such thing as laws of common sense, because common sense itself is just the abstract concept of the trend towards the norm. Trying to say that something doesn't look good because of common sense is directly contrary to logical thinking.

From my understanding, Empires is cast in a universe similar or the same as ours. That would mean the laws of physics... are... the... same. Nothing states they have to have the same design sense, architectural reasoning, or penchant for practicality. Sorry; I refuse to design or bother even thinking about a 'box' with some brown/rusty textures on it. This is not from a realism standpoint, but is a stylistic augment solely for enjoyable gameplay. A little bit of style that sacrifices praticality isn't going to hurt the aesthetics of the game.

You're wrong, concept art can show/be anything regardless of medium. Scribbles with a crayon on a napkin count as concept art. Sorry, they do.

If it takes me 1/2 hour to come up with a concept-structural, instead of 8 hours to fill in every little detail, then I consider that a good use of time. Most of the people on here will have a problem with basic structure, because everyone has a different idea of how they would like Empires to look. If I spent 8 hours making a really beautiful concept art, and everyone was like 'IT CANT HAVE LADDUR , NUB, LAWL", I would be very disheartened.

I realize you probably feel affronted by this. Especially after having modeled that NF Barracks yourself Chris, with the generally poor reception of it, but this is nothing personal. My sense of aesthetics and how I would like to see Empires evolve artistically is evidently different from yours. Neither better, nor worse. Just different.

If you do, however, have some comments, such as "The door might be too narrow" or "The inside will need ______" etc. etc. I'd appreciate them.

i would agree with this if it wasn't about architecture

magic is unexplained in harry potter, so its failiure at making sense is tolerated

architecture is explained, and in empiresmod everything we know still relies on the same rules of architecture as we know them, so it just looks silly

tldr; with magic etc we have no handles or boundaries we know of
with architecture its like telling the earth is flat, its just silly because we KNOW how it works and what is best etc

I didn't say it wasn't concept art because it's poor quality, I said concept art should be high quality.

Because it is of absolutely no use to anybody if it isn't.

Anybody can think of a general idea, the problem usually arises when it comes to making it detailed, which is why concept art exists.

I would have no objection if you made something better than my design, something logical and detailed and of use to a modeller, but you haven't, you've made a poor MSpaint scribble which isn't useful or logical.

Something like what was posted above is the bare minimum, it shows the sort of texture the surface should have and makes logical sense, however it does need more detail in order to be visually appealing, at the moment it's a textured half cylinder and nothing else.

Things like this are useful concept art, with that image I could probably model that quite easily and with relative speed, seeing as all I have to do is copy the images in the viewports.
