Composite has more MEAT in it than regen. Which means you can take more damage in a short time-period and limp away to regenerate it once action slows down. Regen is good for continuous dogfighting, composite's advantage is clear when you fight shorter, intense battles.
All the research is pretty viable, but commanders have fallen back into just always following the same path. Bio, 3 phase, HE, UML or Homing based on map and then a dip into HIT or arty.

its allways been like that just with different research items. for a couple of weeks after a patch you have somewhat diverse research then someone declares something overpowered (or it actually might be) and everyone, no matter if he actually can put the assumed overpoweredness to good use or not, demands that item or its the comms fault that they suck.

dunno i dont feel like this. i think raw stats are really overrated in empires, its the handling that decides. also im sceptical about compo too. regeneration is a very powerful trait since it enables you to drive as gren and rely on rep-pads less. but im sceptical about a lot of things concerning empires. maybe im the wrong to judge ...
