Too many times the commander has to order infantry to build something right behind them because they don't know that a building has been placed there. It would be nice if you could make it a bit more obvious for when the commander places a building near you. Maybe add a good building placement sound (if there already is one that infantry can hear, I haven't heard it) and some effects (mini earthquake perhaps?). Pros: No more ignorant infantry heading off in the other direction of barracks placed. Pretty effects. Easy to implement. Cons: Annoying screen shake.
or what about you you just tell your men to build it, can be done with both an guard order, or just with normal chat/through a mic
no shake screen, and make the sound only hearable by the same team (to not give away someones position)
Yes if a commander places a building next to me and I am an engineer then I usually hear the thump noise and turn round.
Maybe make it a voice message "You are blocking placement of a building" in that "the door is ajar" voice.
it's not the level of the sound, it's the radius of it that is the problem here if you aren't hearing it. that or the noise is being canceled out by some other noise (sometimes happens with tank engines too).
The thump is too easy to miss. Here's an idea: Why not just put a small gray diamond on newly-placed buildings for any nearby engineers? Sort of like the 'target spotted' diamond. Fairly dim, have it fade fast so it doesn't become a distraction, but it'd be enough to call their attention to the new structure.
Make a 'guard target' command automatically given to engys within a certain radius of the placed building.
