I like how water looks. I also stole their PVS algorithm.

    Potential Visibility Set.

    Least I assume so.

Basically optimisation algorithm which decides which part of a computer generated scene need to be calculated.

I spent loads on upgrades and this is still only going to run at 30-odd FPS on my PC. :(

Basically, it got released in the US and Origin at the same time, but some retailers in other countries sent out the disks early. Then a day later it got released in Australia, and on Friday it's due in the UK. My disk might come tomorrow but I don't know.

You can also call Source's PVS the thing that makes Empires achieve 10 FPS on isle in heat of the battle.

DOES AUSTRALIA EVEN ALLOW SUCH VIOLENT GAMES?!

One country did kick off a bit over the shooting of police officers and the bad language.

Why did you buy a disk? Did you get a special edition or something?

Origin is £40. Disk is £30. My download is also shit so it'd be a 2-night job for downloading. For the sake of a few-day delay, I'm not wasting the money.

Wow, it's actually CHEAPER? That's mildly humorous.

Amazon was offering the Limited Edition Origin download for $42 a few weeks ago. Talk about a deal!

Yeah source's PVS doesn't work outdoors.

Or rather, it does, but it's pretty useless without giant hunks of geometry to hide stuff behind.

I thought BF3 did the DX10 GPU occlusion querying like NS2. They did have a paper up that explained they did it for bullet hole impacts to get more precise intersections. That's neat that they can do it in software and makes sense that they can do it low quality and get away with it.

NS2 people are going back to BF3 algo. Occlusion queries are in DX9 already. They might have been even earlier in OpenGL as extension. They just suck for this specific thing because latency fucks it all up.

Source PVS is related to graphics and networking so it also causes heavy CPU use on server-side. Any attempt of adding custom PVS code ends up with server spending 15%+ of all time in few lines of code.

That whole thing with CHC++ is what happens with 90% of papers about real-time graphics. All nice on paper. In reality you hit bug/problems that make whole technique useless and have to redo everything to have any chances of it working (in best case). Just like the paper about parallax that routinely generated infinite texture coords after division by close to 0.

Most stuff is cheaper on amazon than on steam. That's why I have disks of CoD Black Ops, Hawx 2, Crysis 2 and other bits. They're up to half the price of steam. Hawx 2 was like £30 on steam, and at the time it was £7 on amazon. That was 9 months ago and the prices are still the same.
