I really liked the idea suggested here: http://forums.empiresmod.com/showthread.php?t=7723 So, I decided to get XSI Mod Tool and start learning modeling. It would be a great idea if the armory becomes more of an outpost. As someone said before, if a comm drops an armory, he wants that area secured, unlike an APC which can just drive off. I know that bunkers have been shot down by the devs, but this is just a starting concept that can always be tweaked. When I say outpost, I mean a building that has all the conveniences of an armory but provides some better cover for troops. It's more like a fire-base than the original armory. It won't be a full-blown bunker, but it will provide good cover and ammoz/health. It is designed to help at the front lines or lightly secure new territory. I drew this in my spare time: http://img142.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bunker2qg9.png I changed it a bit and started my first model: http://img168.imageshack.us/my.php?image=armory1oy1.jpg http://img168.imageshack.us/my.php?image=armory5zj8.jpg http://img168.imageshack.us/my.php?image=armory2bq6.jpg It is very crude, but it's a start. The poly count is pretty low (370 triangles), so it shouldn't demand too much from computers.
it would be so very sexy to incorporate this idea to help infantry defend bases better...right now they just scramble around like cannon fodder when a vehicle approachs and the team cant afford/doesnt have vehicles. nice model too keep working on it.
While I have my own reasons to oppose this concept (mainly that it would be hella annoying to fight against), I do like your model. And the devs should honestly be so lucky to have someone volunteer a model for them. They seem to have a lack of them lately.
I understand how you feel, but good planning can prevent this. The new armory must have vulnerabilities (like a limited view). When an attacking squad spots this new armory, rather than be annoyed, I think actively exploiting the building's weakness (flanking) will encourage teamwork, giving a sense of importance to the team and accomplishment if the attackers succeed.
Could you remove the smoothing? it makes it very difficult to judge its lies Also, its a "blocky" building, so you don't need smoothing.
I didn't know there was a way to turn off that smoothing effect or I would've. I'm trying to turn it off but I don't know how, the XSI helper isn't worth jackshit.
Here are some shots with the wire frame. The model isn't complex at all, the lighting just makes it look smooth. http://img125.imageshack.us/my.php?image=armory6ey9.jpg http://img141.imageshack.us/my.php?image=armory7rq1.jpg http://img141.imageshack.us/my.php?image=41070729vm5.jpg
