I've noticed that there are NO players in any of the game servers, yet the forums are lit up like a Christmas tree. Where are all the players?
The current version of Empires on Steam has a bug that prevents allmost all players to run the game without a workaround, that's why no one is playing. There are still many people interested in Empires waiting for this bug to be fixed and our developers will release a fix pretty soon. Also, the forum is awesome. :D
Yeah, something to do with a lot of people don't want to play unless there is at least 20 people on the server too. Makes it hard to get a game going.
There seems to be more people contributing to the game than there has been in a while, people are working on code, models, maps and a week doesn't go by without someone asking me how to get the game working or talking about organising scheduled games. whilst the population has been in steady decline for years I think we can afford to be quietly optimistic about things once people can launch the game from steam. Many of the regular players before the bug don't visit the forums and probably do assume it is totally dead. Hopefully they'll get a nice siprise soon
Empires is a roller coaster, there are times where its up and it's down. Right now we are on a slow ascend.
There are reasons why we are still hanging around even when we can't play the game itself. Stay with us, you won't regret.
After I posted that, I was like. "You know what? Fuck it. I'm a programmer. I have a hex editor. I'll fix it the easy way." Seriously, fixed both Crossroads and Escort in like fifteen minutes with a hex editor and the wiki page on the BSP file format after I realized that I'd have to learn about lighting files, building cubemaps, detail scripts, sound scripts and other shit I don't care about if I wanted to do it the normal way.
Candles, out of pure curiosity, who are the active devs we have right now? Maybe they are keeping low profiles, but you seems to be the one doing most works..and the hard works too.
They are among us. They hide in the shadows. If you look hard enough, you might spot one, but they are elusive.
I contributed to the wiki and quick start guide.(well, sort of) But I believe that's more like the contributor :c
