IMO VTOL transports are fine for maps as big as mvalley. You can also make a map which consists of islands and only way to get vehicles across water would be using transport.
the MG turrets where actually the intended models for the anti air installations, i suggest we make new mg turrets since they will be used more and more up close, use the old models for the AA turrets since the AA turrets will only be used if aireal planes come in effect and even then areal planes will never come too close as to see the turrets looking low poly/ugly old
I'd prefer to have a place anywhere VTOL pad, and then airport nodes for non VTOL aircraft if and when they get implemented.
a 2x map is 4x larger surface area and 16x the volume. 2x means that every dimension is multiplied by two. so the map would techincally be 16 times larger. Also, to make detailed terrain for a 16th scale map is impossible in hammer. you can only have so many displacements (less than 900) before you start getting funny errors, like the engine hunk overflow error. in other words, if you don't mind shit maps and textures that are either super blocky or super checkereed board appearing, it's possible, but really, making the maps down to 16th scale would look like shit. it would also severely limit the amount of detail allowed in the maps. another side note, a 16 x map would have 256x the surface area of current maps.
Maybe 1/8th scale or 1/4th scale would be better? Right now, most Empire's maps are too small to have any aircraft besides floating gun platforms and transports. Even a 1/2 scale would be better (i.e. I could see some serious air fights on a duststorm size map that was twice the size).
It's not the volume, it's the detail. You can only make a map so detailed before it crashes the game.
That problem is mostly caused by mappers, 16x scale gameplay is completely possible in the source engine and i think is the best way to go for empires. Here's some pictures of it being tested in Gmod.
Non-VTOL aircraft are a terrible idea. They planned scaling but scaling has so many issues involved that it just won't work. the advantage of VTOL air units is that we'll get to have them on classic maps without shitty scaling code that makes everyone have epileptic seiures becuase the player camera flickers all over the place.
Registry for things like melee is bad enough as it is, scaling will fuck things up royally. Also i think that it would be a lot of extra coding effort (that could be directed at actually making aircraft) and will require totally new maps to implement.
The only point to a 16x map would be for aircraft (nobody's going to walk or drive that far; at 60mph it would take 8 minutes from one end to the other), so a 16x map doesn'tneed to be detailed. Problem solved! Yay! Everybody's happy! <_<
That figure was for a tank or jeep, an example of why somebody wouldn't be driving anywhere on a 16x map. "Oh crap, the CV is in trouble? I'll head there right now! Expect me in about... 3 minutes. Hang tight!"

Yeah, and he needs that brain to make the particles for empires. Anyway, planes don't need to be OMFG MACH 4 SONIC KABOOM LOLOLOL. If you look at the Megel models, as well as most of the concepts/WIPs for BE, they don't look like they'd go too fast, mostly they're just very much vertical birds and gun platforms, not supersonic jets.
