fak u I plan to make a small basic map to get my feet wet, hopefully I can do my infantry trench map.
This is something I've wanted to incorporate into a project for a while. I'm by no means good at hammer, but I'd be willing to try and help with anything if you feel like it would be useful. Empires needs more trenches for those juicy NF meds/heavies to roll over. Too bad scunt rifles would almost ruin trench/bunker combat. Turrets and cams in every doorway. Shottypistol and BEHR/NFAR costs insane credits.
The lines are ladders and sandbag placements, the ladders are intersecting lines, sandbags are open placement. NF has the snakey claustrophobic path, while BE has the wide open area with little cover. The spray paint circles are ditches. Diamonds are objectives
I plan too. From what I was told, I am supposed to fuck bitches and make the maps regardless, and take the feedback to improve it.
Learn about func_detail and some optimizing before you make the map however. Or you're gonna have fun time in fun lagtown! :D
Just don't worry about making it pretty. You have a good concept. Just make damn sure the minimap has enough contrast. The verticality of a trench map demands it.
You know how much prettier escort would be to spec if it wasn't nodrawed to hell because of "optimization" As if any empires map will ever lag. Ever. Fine, you don't draw the bottom of the map, but seriously fuck people who put nodraw on EVERY. SINGLE. SURFACE. that they deem won't be seen when playing.
This is the source engine we are talking about, an engine based off of a 15 year old engine meant only for indoor/enclosed levels.
More people would probably play the game if it didn't look like crap. Not only talking about nodraw here. People could cast games and put them on Youtube. How do you think games like supcom survive? Also, yes, as ridiculous as it sounds it could actually look decent. It doesn't matter how long it takes to compile. We're not making pancakes here. Besides, there are plenty of source maps with INSANE amounts of detail whereas most empires maps are pretty meh in that department which makes up for their size. The bottom of the bridge girders in that one HL2 level weren't nodrawed exactly because they knew the player could fall through and catch a glimpse, and they knew that it would be a complete waste of time to do so. An engine that has been updated numerous times and has survived for more than a decade. There are plenty of huge playerbase made maps for Source games, not to mention official ones. The only way Empires is going to lag is if you have a crap computer or you set off a hundred explosive barrels at once. Or of course if you deliberately fuck around in hammer until you finally break the framerate.
Just talk to Jephir, I'm sure he'll be willing to show you everything you need to know about carving.
