Does having to play empires in windowed mode or fullscreen effect anything?
Cause I noticed a bit of fps drop in windowed mode.

Well duh. In windowed mode your PC is rendering all your background applications along with empires, as well as lowering the relative priority of the games process, making it run slower.

Windowed mode allows other applications in the background to get "power" while playing the game, so yes it runs a bit slower in window mode.

You will probably lose a bit of performance, but you can quickly alttab which negates all other possible negative effects.

Still don't get what would make me want to alttab.

If you don't need it play in fullscreen and use your extra 1-5% performance. I gladly sacrifice that for being able to alttab.

This depends on win7 and vista vs xp. Xp will be slow. Vista and newer won't be for the most part.

All the cool kids irc and play Empires at the same time. Alt tabbing is a must.

DX9 can do HDR. You just can't get AA to go with it unless you have a newer graphics card with unified shaders (newer, meaning nVidia 8800 and up...)

Give Far Cry 1 fully patched a go.
