Well, source 2007 shared materials.gcf is a given, but can I assume that the player will have "source materials.gcf"? The "counter-strike source shared.gcf" has some neat nature textures. I know I cannot assume that a player will have it installed; but I believe it's permissible to knick stuff from the CS:S shared gcf for use in all source engine mods, is that correct?
This thread seems eerily familiar, and no. (Though, Valve is probably going to pretend it didn't see anything if you did...)
So that answers the later question; but what about the former? Can I assume everyone who has empires mod will have source materials.gcf?
The gcfs with the appids 206, 207, 208, 215, 216, 218, 305 and 306 should be safe. Look them up in the valve dev wiki. (That list might be outdated because im not sure if I have the right file). edit here the list: developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Appid It looks like 307 and 308 might be safe too, BUT I have no idea if we are actually requiring those gcfs because I dont have the latest files here. 2nd edit: no you are NOT allowed to extract and use stuff from any other gcfs.
Some of the textures in the empires content GFC are from the official maps; can I unabashedly use those without compiling a list of whom to give credit to for which textures?
Of course. I only pressumed CS:S textures were allowed because: a) If you have any(almost any?) source engine game you have CS:S. b) I've seen mods and custom maps use CS:S textures. c) Valve dev wiki says on the list of standard skyboxes that "These skyboxes are available to Counter-Strike: Source and mods utilizing its content."; which implies that mods are allowed to use its content, but doesn't state the caveat that only mods which require the CS:S shared .gcf may use those textures.
i bought hl2 solely for empires - so no, i dont own css. im not interested in any other mod (though i tried plenty - dystopia was somewhat fun for a bit, but it then died out) or valve game ...
That's odd. When I bought HL2, oh, 6 or so years ago I don't remember that it was even possible to buy HL2 without getting CS:S whether you want it or not.
noone is going to corner you in a dark alley and beat you with a club for doing anything described in this thread 1: valve doesn't care unless you charge for it 2: people do it abundantly enough to guarantee not to be picked out first when they suddenly do start caring 3: copy right laws concerning media is inherently criminal enough to clear any perpetrators conscience no matter how much of a saint he is
Official maps should stay above board. Unnofficial maps will do whatever they're going to do and it shouldn't reflect badly on the mod. I'm not intending to use the CS:S textures for my map(s?).
huh i dunno how i stumbled across this thread again, but those gcfs should be "kosher" ... (apart from the striked out ones from insurgency) only got emp and ins installed ...
