The RC Patches were working fine for me with just having CSS and the SDK and no HL2.
    Now I get the.
Disconnect: User does not own this Game.
Message and that really does suck.

    Any ideas how to fix?
Is this reverted back to HL2 only? (I really hope not. :( )

I thought you were required to have Half-Life 2: Deathmatch to play. For me everytime I start 1.08RC up it says its loading Deathmatch.

That was in 1.07. I can remember Krenzo said that you only need the SDK for 2.0.

You don't need HL2 DM downloaded and installed to play, but Valve has recently required that all mods now require the steam account to have access to HL2 DM. I don't know why Valve did this, but they did a few months ago. Maybe it was to fix it where people could play using the demo?

That didn't work, Steam just updates itself to get it back.
    Any other ideas ? :)

Steam updating itself was a good thing, that's why you have to delete it in the first place, so steam can make a new (correct) one.

    About your problem:
Which source game(pack) did you buy?
    When did this problem occure?

As krenzo said, you now need to have access to HL2: DM. You don't need to have the game installed, but it should be in the list of games that you actually own (buy buying HL2 for example). This is not because krenzo wants it this way, but because valve wanted it. So only a short time ago valve changed it so that you now have to own HL2: DM in order to play a mod.

If you only bought CS: S, then there's a good chance that HL2: DM wasn't included, meaning that since a short time you won't be able to play mods.

Did you try any other mods?

If you have an ATi card, you can dl HL2: DM for free :).

If you don't have one.. there's an alternative, PM me if you're interested since it involves having Steam reading your card as an ATi... and yeah.

    I didn't buy HL2.
I just went and bought CSS.
It worked fine on RC13, then I've gotten all the patches from 14-23, updated now, then I get that damn message.

I have the SDK as well.

Right, they didn't change it to require HL2DM until around RC13. That's when other people brought it up.

I've tried that offer on another account, it says you must own half-life 2 to play mods.

Yeah, my friend has that problem too. Seems that ATi-promotion games donĀ“t count as much as a bought game :/!
