All my maps suffer from a certain visual glitch when i'm underwater. The glitch shape is ever changing, and most obvious when you're moving. The actual problem is that at certain spots you can see the surrounding environment through the water, as if there was no water between the camera and the environment you see in the glitch. From custom map 1: http://users.telenet.be/samhannes/mapping/Water glitch/emp_vehicletraining_rc40088.jpg http://users.telenet.be/samhannes/mapping/Water glitch/emp_vehicletraining_rc40089.jpg From custom map 2: http://users.telenet.be/samhannes/mapping/Water glitch/emp_frost0015.jpg http://users.telenet.be/samhannes/mapping/Water glitch/emp_frost0028.jpg After 2 months i finally decided i should check what i do different then other mappers, but i couldn't find anything. Then finally decided to check the official maps ingame: From Cyclopean: http://users.telenet.be/samhannes/mapping/Water glitch/emp_cyclopean0020.jpg http://users.telenet.be/samhannes/mapping/Water glitch/emp_cyclopean0038.jpg From money: http://users.telenet.be/samhannes/mapping/Water glitch/emp_money0041.jpg http://users.telenet.be/samhannes/mapping/Water glitch/emp_money0043.jpg From mvalley: (this was the ONLY place were i was able to spot the problem in mvalley !!) http://users.telenet.be/samhannes/mapping/Water glitch/emp_mvalley0039.jpg Here comes the most important part: From slaughtered: http://users.telenet.be/samhannes/mapping/Water glitch/emp_slaughtered0035.jpg http://users.telenet.be/samhannes/mapping/Water glitch/emp_slaughtered0036.jpg Slaughtered does not have the problem! Why? What can be done to prevent this from happening? Edit: btw - i've tested my maps with the water, entities and textures used in slaughtered - the glitch happens more when looking over a larger distance, but the lakes in the first custom map are rather small and have the problem more then any other one - the problem goes away when you turn of water refraction, but then you have no water refraction and the skybox will act weird as well.
I'm guessing it's something in the water material itself, i'll check them. I have this problem with just fog rendering behind far Z, so it might be related. I checked slaughtered and money, and both use the same water material, so the material isn't the cause. Try setting the far Z setting in your env_fog_controller to -1, then compile and check to see if it still happens.
Setting far Z to -1 didn't fix it. You were pretty quick with replying, i edited my post at the end with a little extra info.
I didn't notice the problem a few months ago, so it might be caused by the compile tools being updated to a broken version. It's not the first time that something in the compile tools is wrong. Slaughtered hasn't been updated in a while, so if compiled with a newer version of the compile tools, it might have the issue as well. I hope the episode 2 compile tools will work properly.
Well i did mention to Drag that i can clearly remember playing my second custom map (with ice) without the issue. Then one day (somewhere between 1 to 3 months ago) i suddenly noticed it, but i assumed i did something wrong myself. Because it's been so long i never took it into account. I'll compile slaughtered and see what happens. EDIT: it still didn't have the problem.
Thats because of the skybox... notice in slaughtered the water is surrounded by hard terrain and is not exposed to the skybox (Edge of the map), could also be some draw distance stuff... On the other hand, places where you see the skybox...
its not the skybox cause in silks map you can also see it in lakes that are just surrounded by hard terrain.. Also draw distance shouldn't be it either as it happens on different distances and on slaughtered (same material) it doesn't happen
Valve doesn't happen to answer mails concerning mapping problems do they? Maybe if i promise that i buy ep3 if they can help me fixing it. subject: i'll buy ep3 and more if someone can help me with a mapping problem! (no joke) It probably won't work
You can contact Jeff lane on the VALVe dev wiki, or use the hlcoders mailing list. I'd suggest the hlcoders list, programmers tend to hang around there and could know the answer.
I think I haven't got this error at all... Could it be a problem caused by a graphic card? (I have Ati Radeon X1950 Pro AGP version.)
I've got a geforce 6800XT 256MB I'm thinking it's NVIDIA-specific. VALVe or Krenzo broke something. I'm going to see if VALVe did anything. EDIT: i found nothing that indicates that VALVe did anything, so it's probably something that Krenzo did, or the large map size causes it.
geforce 8800GTS 320mb And I DO have this error... If you steal my hardware caelo, i steal your posts Are we all using the latest drivers? Did we download new drivers a month ago that caused this?
I installed the latest drivers but that didn't change anything. This last driver was from december 20, so 2 months ago. I would try to install an older version if i wasn't afraid it might cause problems. But since people with ati card don't have this issue, can i assume i can just continue mapping and compiling, and that the problem will get fixed eventually without having to recompile the map because it's not a mapping issue?
I HAD IT FIRST!!! also arklansman: I would never want to be govenmentless I'm using beta drivers and no problems there.. Also I managed to get empires to run under fedora/wine and no water glitch there...
Have any maps been released recently that have the problem for you? As I haven't seen it on any of the maps I have played. If not, build a quick map to test, then send it to one of us ATI types.
