Unable to connect to servers

Right, I need some help, please. I've been trying to connect to Empires servers to play, but every time it's almost done loading, it closes the connection screen and says "Unable to connect, server using different class tables".

How do I fix this? I had a similar problem once. I thought updating would help, but I've got the most current version, Empires v2.12... :confused:

 

Which servers are you connecting to? Did you install the 2.1 full installer, then 2.12?

 

Make sure you are connecting to 2.1 servers. Some servers are still running 2.0, and there is one server running the unreleased testing version of 2.2

 

I had version 2.0 when I used the updater, it says Empires v2.12 in my games menu (I THINK it was 2.0. It MIGHT have been 2.1 not sure).


All the servers I've tried to connect to say Version 2.1

 

well do you still have those files?

try installing 2.0 then 2.1 then 2.12

 

How do I back-install though? It's sitting at 2.12 right now...

 

reinstall all goes faster! or try to install 2.1 and after that 2.12!

 

1. Delete the empires folder from your steammods folder
2. restart steam, check to make sure empires is gone. If not gone, repeat step one, if gone proceed to step 3
3. fully exit steam
4. install 2.0, then 2.1 then 2.12
5. start steam
6. see if it works

If all that fails let us know here.

 

Ok. I deleted the empires folder, I couldn't find a download for v2.0 but I had the .exe file for 2.1, that installed fine... I patched it up to 2.12, but I still get the same error.

 

Is it the full 2.1 or the 2.1 patch?

 

I installed the full 2.1 version then patched with the 2.12 patch.

Damn it I just want to play empires! DX

 

Try installing 2.1, then 2.11, then 2.12. I wouldn't complain about the number of patches, back in 1.07 we had 7 major patches and several hotfixes to install to get it all to work.

 

Uh... there is no 2.11 on the website. Just 2.12.

Just backpatched to test. Running v2.0 right now, found a few servers that are also running 2.0 (No players, lol). It works NOW. I can connect. I'm going to try the 2.0 > 2.1 patch instead of just directly installing the 2.1 client.

Ok. I figured out the problem o.0 Apparently all of the servers are running v2.1 NOT v2.12
SO. I patched from 2.0 > 2.1 and I can connect now. Thanks all of you for the help! \o/

 

Is Patch 2.12 not client-side only or am I wrong?

 

I don't know whether it is or not but installing patch 2.12 is what caused the problem. Just tried it right now. Installed the patch, tried connecting to a server I had been on just before without it. Different class tables.

 

It looks like it gives you that error because the fix requires an UI resource file which is checked with the server's version. If the servers have V2.12, this error shouldn't occur.

 

I did what you did and I still cannot run on a server.

 

Well like it or not you are gonna need to find a way to get it to work with 2.12, unless you like crashing alot. Every logical cause of this problem has been brought up, so there must be something you are doing wrong that you are not telling us. "Server is using different class tables" only happens when the client dlls vary too much in a certain way from the server. The 2.12 patch simply does not create enough of a change to cause this error for the rest of us. Are you trying to run Empires on something other than "Source SDK Base?"
