The CW Training Server will be coming down in mid May. I've only gotten rave reviews from emp_recruits that have used it. For those of you that don't know, the premise behind the server is that it pops up a new helpful hint every 30 seconds along the lines of "The game can be won by destroying the other teams command vehicle, barracks, or all of the enemy players" or "All classes can build by pressing "E", but engineers build fastest" I think nearly 300 unique steamIDs all with the name emp_recruit have used it so far I suggest someone host it when it comes down in May. It would only have to be like a 4 person server. Anybody's home cable/dsl can support that. I would be glad to send you the necessary files. Any windows XP machine can host the server easily. EDIT: Added incentive: I think it keeps noobs out of regular games until they have at least a basic understanding of the game. I've noticed a decrease in the number of games ruined by noobs stealing the CV
IMO these kind of hint messages should be standard to all players who haven't completed the training. Of course, there would be an option to enable them after this if the player still felt it neccessary. Maybe we could put together a list of tips based on what you're using already?
This is the current list of tips: Only the commander can create big buildings, engineers can build smaller ones. To build defenses, become engineer class. Weapon 4 is the build tool To be commander: enter the commander vehicle (press "E"), then press F2 to go to command view To leave command view, press "E" To rotate command view, press "X" and move the mouse To zoom in and out as commander, press "Z" and move the mouse To join or form a squad, press "F" followed by "S", and choose the right option Ammo can be found in armories or engineers ammo boxes You can spawn in an apc. If you're in an apc (not the drivers position), you'll heal and get ammo! Engineers can right click with their build tool for more options Engineers can drop ammo as well as build turrets, cameras, and walls! You need to build a radar before you can research something As a commander, you can restrict players from using the vehicle factory to save money Every 10 score you can have a new skill upgrade (4 max) Class/skill will be changed when selecting it in an armory, barracks or at a flag, or when you respawn Press "B" to change class/skill, "N" to change team, "E" to enter vehicles or build, "Enter" to choose a spawnpoint. An engineer can build 1 turret and camera, if you're score is higher than 50, you can build 2 of each When you join a squad, you get the first skill for free ! People who are in a squad sometimes get a score for free If your commander vehicle gets destroyed, the game is over Non-engineers can build to by pressing "E", but at a much slower rate than engineers If you drop more than 8 mines, they will explode Visit www.empiresmod.info to learn everything you ever wanted to know
Great start. I may consider bringing this up in the suggestions forum. EDIT: Upon closer inspection, it would seem this is the suggestions forum!
It would be good if those hints are coded into Empires (Sorry Krenzo :p) Like in Natural Selection; they are on by default and they pop up every time you for example look at the Command Chair; or the Humpary with the approperiet one... They were really helpfull in the beging as asking players does get annoying for everyone on the server...
It is 40. I'm just saying what the current adverts are for the training server. They were written by somebody in CW a few months ago. They need updating :p
On a side note, it wouldn't be much coding for the intervals, just tell it to go through a list of notes, in a text file, and show one every so often. Mani did it, so it could even be copied perhaps.
I don't think it should be added as part of the game. I just think someone should host it to do the community some good.
I may be able to in about a year. My moms getting a laptop leaving me with a decent computer. Its got 512 RAM, and 2.4 GHz single core processor.
http://www.pgsit.org/~pugh/cwfiles/trainingserver.rar [482MB] This is a direct copy of the CW Training Server files. For Windows machines. To install it, copy the HLDS folder to a location on your computer. Then redirect the shortcut to point to the HLDS folder. Then to start the server, run the shortcut. Things to customize: 1) in HLDS/empires/cfg/server.cfg make sure to change the rcon password to something secret 2) add your steamID to the HLDS/empires/cfg/mani_admin_plugin/adminlist.txt file to get admin Note: then to access admin on the server type "admin" in console 3) to alter the mapcycle, change HLDS/empires/mapcycle.txt I am going to take down this file soon. So if you want to download it, do so now. INSTALLATION It is as simple as: 1. Download the .rar file to a Windows XP machine 2. Unrar it. 3. Put the HLDS folder where you want it 4. Put the shortcut (from the rar file) on the desktop 5. Right click the shortcut and go to properties 6. Edit the location it points to match where you put the HLDS folder. Make sure to leave the additional info in the shortcut (like -game and -port) 7. Then simply run the shortcut and your server will be running. 8. You can edit those files I mentioned above to give yourself admin, etc (Often you have to restart the server or change maps before changes to those files appear ingame)
I haven't downloaded it yet, but judging from the size you have a whole empires server install there. Isn't that a bit excessive? All you really need to upload are the mani scripts used.
