When creating textures for my maps in the past, i always spend a lot of time in getting the colors and overal color scheme correct. To my personal taste and interest i succeeded with this in vehicletraining, arid, bush and chain (the wip).

Some weeks ago however i bought a new monitor, going from a 19" 4:3 CRT screen to a 23" 16:9 LED LCD monitor. It's not one of those monitors that are used by professional photoshop experts, but i did chose it for it's good contrast and color representation in the budget range if could afford.

I did some calibration using different sites and as far as i know the settings should be as good as they can get. Pictures do look ten times better then they did on the old monitor.

That said, all of my maps look weird now. And other maps look different, but since i did not put time in making those i haven't got such a good eye for the differences in those.

Now i don't know if the colors from my old monitor were wrong and that i have to change most of the textures i made in the past, or that the color(s)/(settings) from my current monitor are not as optimal as i think they are, so i don't know how other people see it or what changes i have to make.

I'd like some of you to tell me which of the two textures below looks best.
The goal was to create a yellowish, dry and rough grass type, with practically no green left in it.

    Old texture:
    On the old monitor:
    green: 5% (estimation by eye)
    yellow: 95%
    On the new monitor:
    green: 50%
    yellow: 50%

Adjusted texture for my current monitor
    [IMG]
    On the new monitor:
    green: 5%
    yellow: 95%

How green/yellow are these images on your monitors ?

the second one already goes into red for me - not much, it actually appears brownish which is good.

the second looks almost like hay

but as you see on flasches monitor it nearly goes into red
    i dont see that
->coonclusion is that your texture color optimisation i practically for yourself only since everyone else is seeing it different anyway

no its only so slight, its far away from being actually redish. i lack words to describe it better - only very very slightly into red ...

2nd one looks way better and more like dry grass then the first one (though its a bit too colorfull imo id desaturate it a little)

Pretty much the same for me. My 2nd monitor is a much older 17" LCD, my main monitor is a 2-3 year old 24" LCD.

and you still have the issue of monitors (noone unless he got a calibrated one) - how to tell what colors are the right ones. also the camera doesnt necessarily replicate the colors correctly either ...

the only thing it tells me is that there is a difference, but i assume you could have said that without photos ;)

Ok, so far it seems as if my current monitor displays the colors more like they should be. The second image appears to be the better one.

It's weird though. I've used the previous monitor for at least 10 years, and it's strangely difficult to accept the fact that i've been watching the wrong colors for all that time. Like some sort of stubberness or denial.
