Look on the recent changes from 27 August 2009. http://wiki.empiresmod.com/index.php?title=Special:Recentchanges Can someone delete this?
The registration page on the empires wiki has no captcha protection to stop spam bots. There is a plugin to add CAPTCHA to mediawiki sites here; http://recaptcha.net/plugins/mediawiki/. Also there is more here anti spam stuff here; http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Spam.
Brutos is the one who maintains the wiki, obv he's on holiday atm. But tbh he should do something about the editing priviledges. I remember him saying he's trying to get Krenzo to give him access to edit it properly, but Krenzo doesn't really respond. Or something like that.
Counter-proposal. We need to create our own bots, bigger, better, and with eye lasers! They shall protect our wiki from the armies of spambots.
Now I'm reminded of a conversation I had, it spawned the idea of 'mapper battles' where mappers use their hammer skills to fight each other, besting complex entity work to create AI controlled death bots against horribly bad optimisation designed to create FPS lag and randomly stop bits of the world from rendering.
Yeah, Brutos brought this to my attention, but I didn't get around it fixing it. I went ahead and added recaptcha to creating an account. It was really easy and wish I had done it sooner. I also cleared out all spam pages and spam users.
I already had made an half automated bot to counter the spam, but since I'm enjoying my holidays atm, I didn't care about the spam much :D. But good that it's fixed now, was a pain to delete hundreds of spam sites and bots every week.
Then why was it still there. I emptied 21 pages of spam. I can't remove the pages due to not having access to that ability but, at least they are blank now.
The users that are bot that have already registered need to be banned first or they will just keep reposting the pages. Or you could turn up the CAPTACHA protection so it comes up for every time you edit a page.
there are companies that hire people to sit behind there home computer and fill in capatchas for bots all day ive seen it on the news this morning, this guy did like 80 capatchas per minute!!!!!!!!!!
Is there a way to disable new account creation? Edit: Figured it out. We'll keep it to where no one can create an account and see what happens. Is there a better option than recaptcha? The forum's method of asking questions about Empires seems to have stopped all spam since it was implemented a long time ago.
