I was just browsing the media on the empires site, and I found this old scout rifle concept (which seems it haven't been used in the mod). sounds like it's about fresh time for the ol' "nerf the scout rifle" 'debate' or has it been flogged to death already? what was the verdict again? and don't give me your opinions: i want REASONS, PEOPLE! edit:---having looked at those sketches, it would be really cool to have a grip that was 45 degrees off to the right, so you held it gansta style, yet it fired forward.

Pyro Paul here's my 'fixed' list: Reasons to Nerf SCOUT rifles: -Empires maps are very open, no cover for other classes, making the scout ultimate killing machine(no other infantry weapon is as accurate as scout rifle, more of this later). -Scout rifle(or Ranged Rifle) kills with one shot in close distances and due to the accuracy of the gun one can take down several riflemen at close range while running(seen this happen plenty of times in emp_escort and emp_district402). -Scouts currently have no real purpose for their team(engineers are medics and pioneers, grenadiers take down buildings and tanks and give medium to long range fire support, riflemen are the work horse doing most of the real killing). Reasons not to nerf sniper rifles: -It's hard to kill people from extreme distances due to the lack of damage on longer ranges(this is actually a good thing considering the openness of the Empires maps). -OMG!!!111!!!WTF!!!111!IWANTTOBEASNIPERANDCAMPZ0RZF0rEZyK1LLz0rz!!!!(not very valid argument, but still pops up a lot).
has anyone remembered to mention that Scout and Rifleman are basically the same, except the scout opperates at long range, and is suited to that (having smoke nades to get away, and stealth to hide, etc), and the rifleman works at close range (1 - 2 second kills at short - med/long range) a rifleman is a much better killing machine, but a scout can keep enemies at a range whereby they can't return fire on you or your comrades. The only thing i don't agree with is the insta kills at close range for the scout rifle... the damage should be "capped" at 50 points of damage. Finally, a diagram, to show that the scout rifle is not OMG OVERPOWERED KILZ US: !.........................!............!.........! firer---effective----effective--scout ------SMG range---rifle range-range the scouts only have that tiny opening of effective fire in which they must kill the enemy, because if the enemy gets closer, they can easily take down the scout.
long range anti-infantry needs to go to a rifleman package, and scouts need a new role. there arnt 2 build/medic classes there arnt 2 anti tank/building classes why should there be 2 anti infantry classes?
Even tho the thread title might be misleading, this thread is about a sniper rifle concept, the sniper rifle has been discussed to death, revived, discussed to death, *repeat, lets not revive it again, verdict has been stated a million times and I'm sure some of the devs have tattoo'd it on their forehead by now. Stay on-topic please. About the concept, the old one definitly looks a lot cooler than the current NF rifle, but I have to admit that I like the old one over your changes, it just looks rugged, and scopes aren't elite enough ;p
where did you find that? im really intrested in concept art. allways wanted to see more duct tape and getto mods for the nf guns. and a nice clean version for the brenodi.

I thought it looked pretty outdated, and did a few changes to it in photoshop. I haven't heard anything about the sniper rifle being removed from the game, so I edited it. Hopefully it could come in use, unless it's being removed.
Ha! The model is bout 2 or 3 years old and was to be the scout rifle till just before our first release when Krenz decided it wasnt scout-ish so we scrapped it. I adore that new concept, but I dont know where we can use it as the new scout rifle has already been modeled and is off to be enimated. Ill save the pic though and keep it in mind just in case we need somthing. Great work. Oh and yes, no more disscussion about the sniper rifle, my crusade agasint the scout rifle has paid off and it shall die in 1.8
Now we can have some fun killing scouts,but what weapons will they have? Just the SMGs? I supose if they;re good enough for the engees the scouts will have to make do.
That pic is not of the SMG 1, it is a rifle that never made it in game. The scout will still have a rifle, but is a completly new rifle, bolt action, high accuracy, very low damage.
personally, i don't have much against the "scout rifle" apart from i'd, rather it had this new style - eg. bolt action i wouldn't mind the "scout rifle" but would rather it was renamed the "sniper rifle" and had a new look, eg, massivly long barrel - and only fired one shot before needing realoded. ok , i'm a little off topic, but couldn't bring my self to making a new thread apout it, and rightly should'nt have.
If it's piss weak, no one would use it. I would not mind a new scout rifle, but it's got to actually be able to kill people. I must note, though, that in my experience of playing Empires, I've never seen that kind of Scout ownage that some people have claim around these parts, except by one or two people.
