I'm not gonna go into how the current research system is confusing and counter-game play; I think its pretty obvious. What I would like to suggest is simpler research. By that I mean, when you bring up the research menu, you would get the following options: Turets Chassis Machine-guns Cannons Missiles Engines So say you want to get HE cannons. First you would research Cannons. Then you would get the option to research another type of cannon, like HE or plasma, similar to researching biology before you get to research the bio engine. So, does that sound good?
The only thing I would change is having plasma MG and plasma cannons be part of one research along with bio mg and missile. Other than that I'm not all that fussed. oh, and I noticed that the description of the research trees don't list everything you can research in that tree. Was really confusing trying to find a certain item I wanted to research without having memorised all the tech trees.
One of the benefits of the current system is that it forces strategic thinking. While a simple system would aid newbies, the current system ensures a much deeper level of strategy. It forces certain combos and trade offs, and orthodox/unorthodox commander strategies. I like how bio has a 'hit and run' strategy, chem has a... well... a something... Mech has an early tech rush strategy.... I think the current system just needs some balancing. Certain armors/engines need to be more useful in certain situations.
I'm with buttery on this one... the current research tree is just more fun, more interesting. i could be persuaded though... with pictures :p
the only problem i see is that some things take way to long to research and so noone gets those things its usally chem/bio then mech then game over
Yep I agree with this part...it's sometimes hard in the heat of the moment to find what you're looking for. I do feel however that maybe the tech tree needs to be reshuffled slightly...I don't feel that things in physics and chemistry actually pertain to those fields (I mean, some things are randomly in chem when they might just as easily be in phys).
Didn't someone post an file that updated the research descriptions a while ago? It keep the same text, but added what the tech would unlocks I think.
again, yeah, i like the idea, i think the time thing has to do with balancing issues. But the system as a whole is functional and ok.
well cool, I do clearly understand it now. but I'm really really not persuaded that it would be better or more fun than the current system.
That really would strip down the whole strategical point of research trees. I would be so bloody boring then. "Research vehicle armors, research absorbant. Research vehicle engines, research advanced coolant. Research vehicle chassises, research medium tanks, research vehicle weapons, research vehicle cannons, research HE cannon." Just so plain BORING! The way how the research tree is now forces you to think and make up strategies. You have to think what happens when you get this and leave that out and after that you get this. Now research trees makes the game more interesting and more strategic.
I'm all the time working on new strategies to find even more powerful paths than the ones which are currently used and I have found many new ones.
People also use variations of the main strategies of chem/bio + mech depending on how the match is going and what the enemy is researching, so it's more like just two starting strategies. I don't see much of a problem with this. I think research is good right now, but it seems like it could definitely be better.
The part I don't like currently is that you need to research certain types (well mainly mechanical for the medium and above tanks) rather than being able to totally specialise in an area. I'd like to see it harder to get into each tree (say the first level is no more expensive than it is now but takes longer, or if you have one then the second is more expensive etc (if thats possible)) but then once you're there have everything you need such as medium tank chasis (they could even be flavoured more like a bio based medium tank would be a tiny bit different from a chem based medium). no idea if it'd work
Hmmm what I would really like to see is the system index described and shown in the screenshots. I hate being comm as I cannot remember the research and I am therefore slow as hell reading how to get the right ammoz and engines. And that makes me miss requests for refs and so on. I would like to have an easy index like that, where I can mark a specific weapon or thing and that marks out the path on the research tree. like say I am commander and everyone wants long range or HE for the boomtanks. Then I find it on the easy index and mark it. THen a lets say green glowing line apears on the research tree showing the way to the stuff I want.
I quite like the current research tree the way it is. The only thing I would like to see is some sort of expansion on the current menu system which would show the research areas that can be accessed once a given research area is finished i.e. have the standard ring of 5 or so research techs, but with a text list of names beside them which show the next tech levels which will become available.
