When commander places a building currently only the smoke tells players if it built or not. Therefore I was thinking about this simple building effect: Unbuild structures are 75% transparent. When you build them the transparency will be reduced constantly till 0%. If possible also add some cheap electrical particles to unbuilt building. Pro: - Adds some more eyecandy - New building don't appear suddenly from nowhere. They fade in. Con: - It will be more easy to find the building engineer The same effect could also be used when you build or redesign a tank. But there the change from 75% transparent to 0% transparent should only take about 1 second.
Krenzo originally wanted something like this: a building framework would be dropped, which would slowly "fill up" into the final building. Fun, but perhaps a bit expensive. Your solution is cheaper, but could players fire through it? Seems logical to be able to if it's transparent.
Fire through unbuilt structures would change gameplay too much. Therefore only transparency. Shooting and clipping should stay unchanged.
What Beerdude said is the problem I can see - transparency lends to people thinking it's insubstantial, so you WILL need hints everywhere to tell you it's not. It's kinda sad in a way that Krenzo's vision hasn't really been realised yet, but it is cool that we're still playing and he still has lots of time to make it what he wanted
Buildings could rise out of the ground while being built like walls do now, but with more smoke and particles and cool things.
lmao... wait wait... if we did that I would SO scout to a location thats being built and stay on top of a VF as its rising and then sab the shit out of it over and over.
Developers: Are there any other cheap effects to make it visible that an unbuilt building becomes built? Transparency --> no transparency can be confusing because you can shoot thru all other transparent objects on maps. Is this possible and cheap: - Completely white with glow --> normal color - Buildings could rise out of the ground (from Omneh) - Building scaled to ammo box size --> normal scale (might look like Alice in Wonderland)
The flag always seemed to work for me - put a flag on top of the building, when the building isn't built have smoke come out as usual, when it is built have a flag pop up instead. After people have built a few buildings it will become really obvious what the flags mean. And it's reallly easy to tell someone a flag means the building is built. Awesome :D
