Wasn't heated, it was a suggestion that would get them in game and not force them on to people. Win win assuming we can add another graphic option.
Man, now that you guys mention it, I really miss the old mortar smoke that would block visibility for a good couple of seconds. And then like people would shoot through it and stuff and it was like war man. Cinematic experience Empires is a way of life.
My computer would die with these particles in a large battle. Still, they're awesome, and I like the FEAR gunsmoke, too. I actually love that game in general.
I've added a new button for it under the multiplayer tab now. I don't mind adding them to the game, I just don't want to force them on anyone.
No one said ANYTHING about forcing ANYONE to do ANYTHING (except FN but fuck him). We just wanted it to be officially part of the game so other can enjoy. Like, no offense against you. But for the past 7 years '99% of empires players machines can't handle X/Y/Z' has been a shitty made up excuse by the rest of the team to be lazy or not attempt something. Like, if I were a SJW, THAT would be my trigger. I'd be all like:
FN has a pretty good point. If you give me the option between using shit particles which don't have smoke vs good particles which do, I'll use the shit particles because I'm not voluntarily putting myself at a disadvantage in a multiplayer game.
Trickster has an obsession with getting an advantage any way he can 'legally' but I reckon if you downloaded his materials folder you'd find quite a lot of materials which are way past borderline legal.
Except I play with 100% stock, without a single custom file. The moment I found out we were moving to Steam during 2.30, I deleted my Empires install and started over because I always felt that Steam would bring sv_pure to scrims, and as such I felt it important that I was used to playing with whatever I'd have to use in those scrims. As it happens, Pure never worked, but I haven't felt the need to go back to customising things. But I'm stating a simple fact. If you give me a "give in-game disadvantage" option within the game, I will not activate it regardless of how pretty it is. It's the same reason I play with near minimum settings in Arma 3 or DayZ. I wish I didn't have to, but I'd be putting myself at a huge disadvantage when I think I'm hiding in bushes or shadows that don't exist for other people because their settings are lower. Likewise, I'm not going to get shot through smoke that doesn't exist for all players in Empires given the option. I know for a fact I won't be the only one that feels like that, regardless of how much you'd like to somehow suggest it's not a problem for anyone except me. I doubt it's really that difficult to make lower quality smoke for the lower quality particles that provides the same amount of visibility blocking. In which case, I'd be more than happy to use the prettier ones.
in empires i only disabled hdr because its so horribly inconsitent between maps. on some its subtile and decent on some you turn snowblind.
